The Good Fund is a seed that was planted 18 months ago and after much nurturing the seed has grown into a successful service helping people living in period poverty.
I have been passionate about wanting to help end period poverty in Aotearoa since 2014 as it is the unspoken, silent destroyer of people who menstruate. It alienates people from their day to day life. It is the choice between feeding your family and having that ounce of dignity that you deserve. It is misunderstood by many and well understood by those who refuse to ask for help because of their pride or deep set taboos.
You might be living in period poverty if you experience any of the following:
1. Have had to use socks, towels, toilet paper, nappies or other fabric to manage their period.
2. Have often missed work/school/uni because of their period.
3. Have had to ask food banks or another orgnisation for period products more than once.
The menstrual packs that we put together have a huge amount of aroha that goes into them. From the products that are carefully selected to the careful packing of the parcels everything is done with love.
Emails are replied to, community groups supported with products and then making sure we have enough products to do it all again the following month.
Kind and generous businesses all over NZ contribute to this mahi to place essential items in with our packs. Items that someone may have dreamed of buying but never been able to afford. We are so grateful for this sponsorship. Thanks to Mia Belle NZ Ethique Do Gooder and for helping us in 2020!
So this service is crucial as it helps so many. It gives people the dignity they deserve.
Our service is now closed until the end of January. In the new year we will be running things a little differently. We haven’t quite worked out how this will look but we assure you we are working hard to offer the best service that we can.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us in 2020! We appreciate every thought, donation, message, email and help that has come our way.
2021 here we come!
