Karen Wiringi, our latest Taumarunui Hospital nursing recruit
🌟 Taumarunui Hospital’s latest nursing recruit’s commitment to learn and desire to serve her community is an inspiration to other staff according to the hospital’s manager.
Charge Nurse Manager Sarath Surendran said though a recently graduated registered nurse, Karen Wiringi is no stranger to the hospital or their team.
“Karen is our new Nurse Entering To Practice (NETP) programme participant but worked here for two years as a part-time health care assistant while she completed her full-time study. The NETP programme provides a structure platform for nursing graduates to begin their careers with robust support and guidance."
Sarath said Karen’s dedication will hopefully serve as a motivation to others.
“Living locally, Karen did most of her training with us here at Taumarunui Hospital. All of our other students have come from Hamilton or other areas, but she is our first local success story for quite a while.”
Meanwhile, the nurse at the centre of praise was quick to divert the attention to others.
“Being a student was hard at first, new places and meeting new people was scary for me. But it was two weeks into my first placement when I realised how helpful everyone here is. I was treated amazingly well from all staff, especially when they realised, I lived in Taumarunui. They were all but rolling out the red carpet for me.”
Karen said the strengths of working in a close-knit rural hospital were readily apparent during her three-year student journey to become a registered nurse.
“Everyone was offering help if I needed it with anything and providing me with the resources they used when studying. Being offered work here as an HCA when on study break was also a big help as I had two teenage sons at home and my granddaughter who I raise full-time. I’m really proud to be able to represent my community in this way.”
