✨Client win✨

The best part of my job is seeing my clients incredible hard work pay off with real health outcomes.

After being told by his doctor that he needed to make changes to his nutrition to improve his health, particularly decrease his type 2 diabetes medication, he is now on the right track.

3-months of focusing on his eating habits has paid off with these incredible results.

Very proud and look forward to continuing working with this client on his journey to take back control of his health.

A reminder to head into your weekend with - health is built on consistency not perfection. Perfection builds up pressure and restriction which is never sustainable in the long term.

So to avoid that dreaded on and off the bandwagon diet mentality, think of this analogy, if you dropped and cracked your phone would you go and repeatedly drop it getting more cracks in it. Of course not. The same applies to your diet. If you have an indulgent meal, enjoy it, don’t let that one meal hold power over you to feel like you ruined your progress or results. You don’t need to start again another day, you just need to enjoy and move on, focusing on consistency with your habits, not perfection ✨

Food is so much more than fuel and nutrients. It holds the power to bring people together, foster connections, and provide comfort and joy.

In my nutrition consultations, I emphasize the importance of cultivating a healthy mindset around food. It's not about labeling foods as "good" or "bad," but rather practicing freedom within structure.

By establishing guidelines and structures that ensure we receive the essential nutrients our bodies require, we set ourselves up for long-term health.

But let's not forget the other side of the coin. We also need to embrace moments of relaxation and pure enjoyment. It's essential to find balance by allowing ourselves to indulge in foods that bring us joy and nourish the soul.

It’s all about learning to celebrate the full spectrum of food's power!

Clinic chats this week have been all about Vitamin D ☀️

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining our bone health, muscle function, immune system, and even our mood. If you've ever wondered why you're experiencing those winter blues, it might be worth considering if Vitamin D deficiency has a part to play.

We all know that sunshine is the best source of Vitamin D. However, for our bodies to effectively absorb it, the sun needs to be high enough in the sky, casting a shadow shorter than our body. Sadly, during these chilly days, it's rare to find ourselves outside basking in sunlight at that optimal time.

Did you know that approximately 5% of adults in New Zealand are deficient in Vitamin D, with an additional 27% falling below the recommended blood levels? If you belong to a group at risk of deficiency (such as older individuals, those with darker skin tones, or people living in the South Island during winter), it's worth considering getting your levels tested.
And if you're feeling low on sunlight, experiencing a dip in mood, or noticing your immune system feeling drained, it is worth exploring Vitamin D supplementation over the winter months ❄️

🌱💡 Curious about what to expect during a nutrition consultation?

During an initial nutrition consult, my focus is on understanding YOU, your unique goals, and your current diet and lifestyle. This enables me to craft a nutrition plan that not only yields results but is also simple, practical, and enjoyable in the long run.
Here's what we'll cover:

1️⃣ Getting to Know You: We'll dive deep into understanding your relationship with food. By exploring your preferences, routines, and lifestyle, we'll lay the foundation for a personalized approach that suits you best.

2️⃣ Assessing Your Current Habits: We'll take a closer look at your current lifestyle and eating habits. By understanding where you are now, we can create a roadmap to guide you towards your goals. Together, we'll identify areas for improvement and set achievable milestones along the way.

3️⃣ Tailored Caloric Calculation: To ensure your meal plan is specifically designed for your body composition, we'll conduct a tailored caloric calculation.

4️⃣ Collaborative Nutrition Program: This is a team effort! I'll work closely with you to develop a nutrition program that meets your personal needs and aligns with your goals. We'll establish a plan that fits your preferences, ensures balanced nutrition, and helps you thrive on your wellness journey.

5️⃣ Empowering Education: Along the way, I'll provide you with essential knowledge on various health topics crucial to your success. From understanding macronutrients to learning about mindful eating, you'll gain insights that empower you to make informed choices and sustain healthy habits for life.

If you're curious to know more, give me a bell, I’m happy to chat you through the process.

The hot topic in the clinic this week is sleep and appetite. Did you know that sleep actually influences the release of our appetite hormones, including ghrelin (aka the hunger hormone) and leptin (the satiety hormone)? 😴 When we don't get enough sleep, our bodies produce more ghrelin and less leptin, making us feel hungry and increasing our craving for energy-dense foods. 🍔🍟 But here's the catch: indulging in these types of foods can disrupt our sleep quality, setting off a never-ending cycle. So, the key takeaway here is to prioritize those precious zzzz's in order to make better food choices throughout the day. 💪✨

It’s mandarin season 🍊
Given their high content of vitamin C, mandarins are known for strengthening your immune system. You may commonly hear of people supplementing with vitamin C over the winter months, but you can very easily reach the recommended daily intake from food alone. Adults need around 45mg vitamin C/ day. This could look like 2 mandarins (my favorite), 1 orange, 1 kiwi fruit or 2 cups of silver beet.
How do you like to get your vitamin C in over the winter months to avoid those winter blues? ❄️

Hot topic in the clinic this week has been embracing your body's cravings and eating with the seasons! ❄️ It's completely normal to gravitate away from fresh salads and smoothies during winter. However, it's essential to find comfort in new healthy food choices.

As we embrace the winter season, it's the perfect time to lean on the power of nourishing cooking techniques like slow-cooking, soups, hot breakfasts and batch cooking which allow us to create wholesome meals with ease, promoting a sense of comfort and alleviating winter blues.

My clients' nutrition plans are now featuring alot more soups, slow-cooked curries and stews, and comforting hot porridge like this one. 🥣

If you're seeking inspiration in the kitchen to stay on track with your nutrition goals this winter, I'm here to help! 🌟

You can book a consultation with me through both online and in person in Taupo.

My first time cooking with Spaghetti squash this evening, such a fun vegetable 🌱

Cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, pop it in the oven flesh-side down, bake for 30 to 35 mins, then use a fork to shred the squash into noodles 🍝

I served mine with meatballs and a tomato sauce 🍅

The spaghetti squash is rich in fiber, B vitamins, vitamin C and powerful antioxidants 👊

Super tasty and a great alternative to noodles, definitely recommend giving it a whirl👩‍🍳
