Baby talk = communicating with melody to highlight words and maintain baby's attention.
Baby talk like this helps language development.
Researchers found us kiwis are pretty good at it 🙌

'Baby talk' is an international language, according to a new study - and Kiwis are perhaps the biggest culprits.

👂Grommets 👂
Have you heard of them? If your child has experienced Otitis Media or glue ear, you'll know all about grommets.
Glue ear can have a huge impact on communication as it frequently occurs at crucial phases of a child's speech and language development.
This is a great video of how grommets are inserted, and a fascinating look at just how thick that "glue" is inside, like "rubber cement glue".
Imagine trying to hear through all that glue.

International Stuttering Awareness Day 🌸
Stuttering is okay! If you stutter, or get stuck while speaking, or have difficulty with speaking easily, then you're still valid because WHAT you say matters and not HOW you say it!
You stutter loudly, stutter proudly!

Approximately 1% of the population stutters. In New Zealand that means around 45,000 people, with a male to female ratio of 4:1.

Advice to others when talking to a person with stuttering: 🌸
Listen to what they say and don't interrupt them!
Don't finish their sentences!
Don't ask them if they forgot how to speak!
Be patient and don't make a face!
Be kind and be respectful ♥️

What a great reminder to use what you have in the house during lockdown, read all the favourite books, make it work. There is comfort in the familiar and the favourite.
Stay safe Aotearoa. We can do this ❤

Feeling unprepared for this lockdown? Same! Did you know that 'making do' with the books, toys and resources you have at home actually has educational benefits? When we repeat the same stories children have more opportunities to embed what they learn and more opportunities to take a turn. The more familiar they are with the material - the easier it is for them to link the ideas to their own lives.

Even the pamphlets you receive in the post can be interesting to pēpi - and great for big kids to cut up and make a collage.

Telling the same stories is good for pēpi and tamariki. Kia kaha Aotearoa. We've got this!

The Speech Central Taupō Story

Communication is at the heart of who we are as people and how we interact with the world around us.

Hi - I’m Mel Dakin, speech language therapist and owner of Speech Central Taupō.

As a speech therapist, I believe in evidence-based, practical intervention that is tailored to the needs of anyone dealing with communication difficulties. Working alongside a child (or adult) and their family is the best way to achieve their goals and really make a difference for that individual.

I have 10+ years experience working with a variety of clients, previously across the wider Auckland region for the Auckland District Health Board and more recently here in Taupō with Speech Central. I currently enjoy a great deal of variety in my work as a speech language therapist, working with children's communication difficulties, adults with acquired voice or language difficulties and brain injury.
