DILATION STATION! 💯

Aka the "Get it done position." 💪🏽 Most of my clients know that I love using the toilet for labor. It's the best way to release a pelvic floor and help a baby descend into the pelvis. The contractions are super intense on the potty, but that's because they are super productive! Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the all time best labor positions!

🚽you are naturally prone to relaxing your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on the toilet.
🚽the bathroom is a place of privacy and solitude and you are used to relaxing in this room.
🚽you are using gravity
🚽you are opening your pelvis.
🚽you are allowing your baby lots of room to rotate and navigate the birth canal.
🚽you can also turn around and straddle the toilet with a pillow in front of you for comfort.

I call it the “dilation station” for a reason. I’ve encouraged many mommies to spend some time laboring on the toilet. It’s not uncommon for baby to come rather quickly after that 🤗

Everyone should have this information. 👇🏼
This way, if you choose to have IV fluids and or need them, newborn weight and loss/gain can account for this in the first weeks.
In 2011 a team of Canadian researchers published a study which linked routine IV fluids with excessive weight loss in newborns. The study concluded that it takes about 24 hours for babies to correct their fluid state and therefore a true birth weight should be done at 24 hours. Here's the issue with with weighing baby at birth with a mother who received IV fluids: those fluids not only over saturate the mother (throwing her into an electrolyte imbalance), but this same thing happens to baby!
So let's say you had the typical hospital birth..labored for 12 hours with fluids being pumped into you the entire time. Baby is born weighing 8lbs 8oz. You go to your 3 day postpartum checkup and baby is down to 7lbs 5oz! Well..thats over a whole pound lost. The provider you see suddenly encourages you to supplement with formula because your baby is losing too much weight. You wonder how could this be...youve been nursing round the clock, changed plenty of wet diapers. How could this happen? .
You spent months researching breastfeeding and all its benefits for it to come down to this?..and at only 3 days postpartum! You feel like you've failed, but you fear that your baby is starving. So what do you do? You supplement...with formula. Next your milk supply drops because you're not bringing baby to the breast, but rather to the bottle. Before you know it you have an exclusively formula fed baby. .
This scenario is SO common, and I believe receiving IV fluids in labor is a HUGE part of the problem. As if the obstetric community hasn't failed women enough..now their "harmless" interventions caused you to lose all confidence in your ability to feed & nourish your baby from your breasts. .
So what can you do???
1. STAY OUT OF THE SYSTEM!
2. Say NO to routine IV fluids
3. Bring this study to attention if this happens to you
4. Continue nursing your baby. Bring baby to breast as first solution when she cries
5. Nurse in demand NOT on schedule

Dear C-Section Scar,

I didn’t want you. I didn’t plan for you. In fact, I did everything I could to avoid you. But today I touch you with compassion. I smile at you. I send love, grace, and tenderness to you.

You are not weakness. You are not failure. You are not a mistake. You are part of me.

You are not a dead end, the place where my birth journey halted and could travel no further. You are a passage I am still discovering. You are the door that opened to my baby. You are the door that opened into who I am as a mother and as a woman.

Riding over bumps in the car. Laughing and coughing. Bending at my waist. The day I stopped taking narcotics to soften your pain was a milestone. The day I could get out of bed without holding my husband’s arms and without searing pain was a milestone. The day I could stand up from the rocking chair while holding my baby was a milestone. The day I could sit on the floor to play with my son and make my own way back up to my feet was a milestone. The day I could bend over to pull my underwear up by myself was a milestone. These were milestones I resented. I didn’t want to have to be passing through these milestones.

I wasn’t prepared for the numbness. I couldn’t feel anything when my fingertips touched my own skin in the inches between my belly button and p***c bone. My fingers felt like they were touching someone else’s body; there was no feedback from my nerves that had been cut. It felt like I was touching something in me that had died.

The doctor cut through six layers of muscle, tissue, and organ to get to my baby. She separated my abs in the middle and pulled my baby through. I have met at least seven new layers within myself because of you.

You are not my whole story of becoming a mother. But I will never know how my birth as a mother would have been different had I pushed my baby out of my va**na.

C-section scar, You are the dark place cut into me that opened into light. You will never be one simple story, but you will always be mine.

🤱 Postnatal Depression "PND" 👨‍🍼

🌈Having a baby is a life-changing event, and while it can be a time of great joy, it can also be really difficult.

🌈Depression can happen any time during pregnancy or up to a year after your baby is born for mum and dad.

🌈Here’s what is the difference between baby blues and PND, what to look out for with PND and how you can help yourself or your partner.

🌈Depression is an illness – being depressed doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a parent, or as a person.

💕 If you’re worried that you might have postnatal depression, talk to your doctor, midwife, Plunket nurse, or Well Child provider right away.

Also:

💜For mum's check out for support groups.

💜For dads check out with their for some great chats on mental health.

🤝 If you know of any other great resources or support groups.

Posted • NOTHING will work if your body isn't ready to go in to labour!

Having s*x won't work.

A stretch and sweep won't work.

Pineapple won't work.

A bumpy car ride won't work.

Even an induction with synthetic hormones that are trying to force your body into labour, won't work! (It may however cause contractions but not dilation, stress your baby out and result in a csection).

It really is as cliche as it comes 'if your body isn't ready, nothing is going to work.'

And if does work, your body was actually ready for labour and birth (so was your baby).

It's really not that complicated.

Midwives and Doulas
We are the only mammal on Earth that doubts our ability to give birth. Ina May Gaskin, probably the world’s most famous midwife once said, “Remember this, for it is as true as true gets: Your body is not a lemon. You are not a machine. The Creator is not a careless mechanic. Human female bodies have the same potential to give birth as well as aardvarks, lions, rhinoceri, elephants, moose, and water buffalo. Even if it has not been your habit throughout your life so far, I recommend that you learn to think positively about your body.” One look at the exquisite hormonal cocktail 'delivered' to the Mother in those minutes after the birth and you get it, your body is not a lemon.

New Mum of Two

Before we met, I wondered if I could love another as much as I loved my first, if I could split my heart in two.
I worried it would be different, I worried for the unknown.
But people told me I would take one look at you and my heart would only grow, and it was true.

I just couldn’t have prepared for how much, or the things you would teach me.
My second child,

I learnt that my heart could sing, the first time he laid eyes on you, the first time you held hands. I saw what I had given you, each other.

I learnt to slow down, I wasn’t in such a hurry to store away your clothes, maybe that onesie could last a little longer, I may never buy that size again.

I learnt to lean into my intuition, I found myself so much through those harder days, and I think I grew the most too.

I learnt that even though I felt divided, I was enough. Sometimes we would become a mass of tangled cuddles on the kitchen floor, and I realised, this is how some days would be. We’d all muddle through together.

I learnt that my style of parenting was whatever worked for us. It can be hard being so needed all the time, but in many ways it’s also mutual. One day you won’t need me like this, and every day that thought gets closer.

I learnt that even though I had done this once before, it was like leaning to walk all over again, a new chapter, a new language, a whole new person. We both were growing and learning from each other.

I learnt to be still, those things can wait, they really can.
Because your firsts are probably my lasts.

And on the days I feel defeated, I think of the day I met you, when I was somewhere between the earth and the stars, just after I said I couldn’t.
You remind me every day that I can.
You both do.

Not a new Mum, but a new Mum of two.

Posted • ☆ You cannot wing birth ☆

If you don't prepare, your giving other people control over your body, your baby and all that happens to you!

You only get this birth one time and the way the system is designed, you need to prepare to know how to prevent birth trauma- I'm serious.

Ask ALL the questions, know the impacts of EVERYTHING, arm yourself with all the knowledge, so on the day YOU are the one with the power.

All i did for my first birth were some very basic ante natal classes and i still walked away knowing nothing about how my body worked and what it needed, and i just thought it would all be a breeze- i walked away from that birth utterly traumatised wondering what the heck had just happened to me!

Did you prepare for your birth or just wing it?
