Why?
Because there is no blank slate.

A rescued dog doesn’t arrive empty or neutral. They arrive already carrying history and recently they’ve had a lot of “new”. New for many rescued dogs is a lot to process and when every single sense they have is full trying to take in everything around them, feeling safe is very difficult to find.

New environment, new smells, new rules, new rhythms, new people. Even kindness can be totally unfamiliar to them and unfamiliar can be like a big ole hole in the “safety” bucket. We can fill it all we want with what we have read “helps”.
That security and safety is still leaking out, it doesn’t have time to sit and settle and yep, I suppose there is a safety sediment.

When we ask a dog to cope before they’ve even had a chance to settle, all they are doing is coping.
There is no settling.
Safety is what allows everything else to come later.

Safety looks like routines that don’t change, space that isn’t invaded and time where nothing is required of them.
Nothing at all.
It looks like letting a dog observe without participating and just "be" without performing.

And yes, it can feel slow. Unproductive.

It can also feel awkward.

I read a thread on a post in a rescue group and people that suggested keeping them quiet for a few days were often shut down.
“Do people do this? Why, that’s so boring for them”.
That’s the point, boring is safe and allows for stress levels to drop instead of being “topped” up.

“No way could I do that, she’s had months of living in that shelter”
That’s exactly why.
You want a dog to become part of your family, you’ve opened your heart and your home and now more hurdles are all around her. Climbing them can take a big toll.

Every single one of those people commenting had previous posts about the real difficulties they are facing and have been facing for a while.
All of those new experiences in the first few days can delay feeling safe.

You can’t rush settling.
But you can interrupt it.
Over and over again.

“I’m thriving in foster care with my sissy Missy. I’ve gained so much confidence from living with another doggy. I’m a totally new dog! I’m ready to find my forever home, but it MUST have another dog. I love to hang, play and sleep with other dogs.
P.s. I’m the white and brindle girl!”

🦮🐕 M A R L E Y 🐕🦮

Meet Marley, a gentle old soul looking for a quiet place to retire. 💞

Marley is around 12 years old and is believed to be a Shar Pei x Lab. She’s a rescue, so her exact details are a little unknown but what is certain is her love for people. Marley is a calm, affectionate girl who would much rather be curled up beside you than causing any fuss. If you get her excited, she’ll still have a little run around with you, but cuddles are very much her love language. 😍

Marley had a tough start to life. She was abused as a puppy before being rescued and although she has been safe and loved ever since, those early experiences have left her shy and sensitive. Loud noises scare her and she may flinch as she’s learned to be cautious. She needs patience, gentleness and time to feel safe. Once she trusts you, her bond is incredibly special. 🔒

She is wonderful with people, including children, but Marley does need to be an only pet. She is reactive to other dogs and is not suitable for homes with cats. A calm, low-traffic home where she can be someone’s one and only would suit her perfectly.

One of Marley’s favourite things is leaning into her person. If you’re sitting on the ground, she’ll gently nudge her head under your arm, asking for a cuddle… it’s her signature move, and it’s pure magic.

The important bits:
• 📍 Located in East Auckland
• 🐶 Female, desexed
• 💊 Flea & worm treated
• 💉 Vaccinations only as a puppy
• 🐾 Microchipped (believed to be, to be confirmed)
• 🚫 Not good with cats or other dogs
• 💧 Doesn’t like water (unless it’s for drinking!)
• 👁 Had surgery years ago for ingrown eyelashes; one eye still tears up at times

Why she needs a new home:
Due to hardship and an upcoming move, her family is heartbroken to say they can no longer take Marley with them.

Marley is a truly special dog who deserves a peaceful retirement filled with love, routine and reassurance. If you have a quiet home and a soft spot for senior dogs, Marley could be your shadow and your best friend.

Please reach out if you think you could be the safe place Marley needs! 🤍

🐈🐈‍⬛ M I N N I E & M I S T Y 🐈‍⬛🐈

Meet Minnie and Misty, two utterly sweet 10 week old kittens who are quietly stealing hearts in their foster home. 💞

Minnie is the tabby, Misty is the little black shadow and together they’re a beautiful mix of cuddly, curious and gently brave. They’re still a bit shy at first, but every single day you can see their confidence growing. Once they feel safe, they melt into soft purrs, snuggles and wide-eyed curiosity about the world around them.

They love being close, watching what you’re doing and tentatively exploring with those tiny kitten steps that somehow manage to be both cautious and bold at the same time. They’re incredibly sweet souls who just need a calm, loving home to continue blossoming.

Currently located in 📍Tokoroa, with all vet work to be completed in Tauranga, Minnie and Misty will be desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and flea/worm treated before heading off to their forever homes.

They’ll be available for adoption very soon and expressions of interest are open now. If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate kitten who will grow into a loving companion, Minnie or Misty might just be your perfect match! 🐾

Kia ora… I’m Sorren.
I’m a handsome Huntaway x, nearly 2 years old (I’ll be 2 in June) and I live in the Hamilton–Morrinsville area. I’m looking for a new place to call home and I promise I’ll try my absolute best to be your good boy.

I can be a little shy when we first meet, but once I know you’re my person, I’m all in. I love my walks, I live for a good game of fetch and I learn things really quickly… especially if you whistle for me or call my name, because my recall is pretty impressive if I do say so myself. I’ve got lots of energy to burn, but I also have a very soft side… I’m a huge fan of snuggling in bed, belly rubs and being close to my people.
I’m actually a total softy. Sometimes my heckles go up when I’m excited, nervous, anxious, or scared, which can make me look tougher than I am, but it’s just how I show big feelings.

I don’t do very well in kennels, I really need to be part of the family. I walk best on a harness and I love toys… maybe a little too much. I tend to chew them and sometimes swallow bits, so tougher toys are best for me. Water-wise, I’m still figuring things out… I’ll happily go in up to my chest, then decide that’s deep enough, thanks.

I’m great with other dogs and really enjoy their company. Cats are fine too, though I might follow them around like a bad smell because I’m curious. I’m very gentle with babies, but toddlers through to pre-teens are a bit tricky for me because I sometimes forget how big I am.

A few important things about me: I’m microchipped, flea and worm treated, not yet desexed and my vaccinations aren’t up to date but this can be arranged. I’m not on any medication. I also sleep in the weirdest positions imaginable, which usually gives everyone a good laugh.

One of my favourite hobbies is collecting sticks. If I can’t find one on the ground, I’ll happily remove a low branch from a tree or shrub to make my own. Resourceful, right?

I’m looking for a new home because my family has had to move and can’t take me with them. I stayed with a friend for a while, but they’re going back to long work hours and can’t keep caring for me. This wasn’t an easy decision as they love me very much and just want what’s best for me.

If you think you might have space in your heart and home for a loyal, goofy, affectionate boy like me, please reach out. Even sharing my post could help me find my forever place! 🤍
