The hormonal shifts that occur as we enter our 40's take us through what is known as the perimenopausal phase and into menopause when our menstrual periods will come to an end. This transition through perimenopause to menopause can last on average around 7-10 years.

Symptoms can change along the way and every woman has their own unique experience of it. Some women go through it with minimal issues and others can experience years of challenging and sometimes uncomfortable symptoms such as heavy periods, mood changes, anxiety, sleep disturbances, headaches, allergic symptoms, skin concerns, hot flushes, night sweats, low libido and vaginal dryness.

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month 🌸

Endometriosis is an inflammatory condition that affects around 1 in 10 females. It can cause debilitating period pain, alongside many other symptoms including gut problems (bloating, constipation, diarrhoea), fatigue, and pain in other areas like the back or pelvic area.

It can often require the care of a doctor or gynaecologist, however a naturopath can work alongside these professionals to alleviate symptoms, provide supportive nutritional advice and help to reduce the inflammation contributing to endometriosis.

To celebrate International Women's Day tomorrow (8th March) I am doing a series of posts this month on the life cycle of female hormones. Starting at the beginning with Teen Hormone Challenges.

The average age for periods to start is around 13 years old but it can happen anywhere between 10-16 years. Those first few years of menstruation can be challenging for a teen but there is lots that can be done to support them and make that hormonal transition a bit easier. When you have too many eggs from your chickens and find a monster lettuce in the glasshouse….. Made a fave of ours - an Ottolenghi inspired curried egg and cauliflower salad served in lettuce cups.

Roasted cauliflower and onion in olive oil and curry powder, combined with chopped boiled egg and lightly dressed in a little mayo and natural yoghurt. Served in lettuce cups and topped with chopped celery and parsley. We had with leftover roast chicken from last night (but it’s enough on it’s own really!) Yum!

I feel so lucky to be able to pick this beauty from our glasshouse today 😍 Used it to add flavour to my tomato & lentil soup for lunch (will post recipe later). Will add it finely chopped to a potato salad for a winter BBQ tonight and the rest will be used for lunchboxes and added to smoothies this week.

Looking for another easy veggie side dish to add to dinner tonight? Shred half a red cabbage, sauté gently in olive oil for a few minutes, add 1-2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and cook for a further 5 mins until the vinegar has reduced and cabbage is just tender but still has crunch. Season to taste, sprinkle over sesame seeds and you are good to go!
