In Aotearoa, Māori have a deeply meaningful way of honouring life through tangihanga, the funeral process that takes place on the marae.

It is a time of gathering, mourning, storytelling, song, and connection - where whānau and community come together to farewell their loved one.

From staying with the tūpāpaku (deceased) on the marae, to sharing waiata and kōrero, and finally laying their loved one to rest at the urupā (cemetery), every step reflects aroha, respect, and whakapapa.

Tangihanga reminds us that a farewell is not only about loss, but also about honouring the legacy of those who came before, and the love that continues long after.

Supporting someone who is grieving doesn’t mean finding the perfect words, often, it’s simply about being present.

Here are three gentle ways to help:

• Truly listen - holding space and letting them share, at their pace, without judgement.
• Offer practical support, like a meal or errands.
• Remember special dates, a call or message can mean so much.

Grief is a journey, and small acts of kindness can make it easier to bear.

Nau mai ki Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Welcome to Māori Language week. By learning simple greetings or phrases, individuals can actively participate in preserving and celebrating the unique identity of Aotearoa, whether at work, social events, or cultural gatherings.

This effort not only promotes understanding but supports the normalisation of te reo Māori and strengthens its identity as a living, integral part of New Zealand’s
culture.

A few phrases that you might like to try are:
Kei te pēhea koe? - “How are you?”
Aroha nui – “With much love”
Kei konā te whakaaro - “Thinking of you”
Ngā mihi nui - “Warm greetings” or “Many thanks”

We encourage everyone, starting this week, to expand their knowledge of Māori language and heritage, supporting its growth and accessibility, and in turn, ensuring its vitality and longevity for future generations.

“Kia ora tonu to tatou taonga tuku iho mo naianei me nga ra kei mua” - “May our
inherited treasures continue to be well for today and the days to come”.

This Father’s Day, we would like to take a quiet moment to celebrate all fathers - those we are blessed to still have by our sides, and those who now live on in our hearts and memories.

To the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures still with us: your love, strength, and guidance are daily gifts. Your presence shapes families, offers comfort, and leaves a legacy that will be felt for generations.

And to those remembering a father no longer here: we know this day can carry both love and longing. May you find peace in the memories that never fade, and comfort in knowing that a father’s love lives on - in your stories, your traditions, and the person you’ve become.

Honouring every dad this Father’s Day – present, remembered, and forever loved.

Our very own Fergus Keith was recently featured in , sharing the surprising realities of life as a funeral director, and why it’s time we all talked more openly about death, and life.

For Fergus, becoming a funeral director wasn’t part of the plan, but it’s become his most rewarding calling. With empathy and care, he helps families craft farewells that aren’t just about saying goodbye, but about celebrating a life well lived.

At Legacy Funerals, we believe every farewell should be as unique as the life it honours. Through thoughtful, personalised services, Fergus and our team help families create meaningful services that bring comfort, connection, and celebration when they’re needed most.

The Menz Shed Mount Maunganui, recently benefited from a donation of a new Belt and Disk Sander, courtesy of Legacy Funerals.

In conjunction with the donation, Funeral Director Robert Barclay visited the premises at 49 Aviation Avenue in Mount Maunganui, witnessing first hand how the Menz Shed provides a vital environment for men of all ages to connect, develop their skills, and contribute to the community through the making and repairing of goods. With ongoing support and open membership, the Shed continues to serve as a valuable hub for friendship, well-being, and community engagement. It’s the ideal place to “share know-how and enjoy a cuppa with the blokes.”

We recently heard from Lisa at , who shared what it’s like working alongside the Legacy team. What stood out? The genuine warmth, the way the team supports each other, and how no one hesitates to lend a hand when it’s needed.

That sense of care doesn’t stop with the families -it’s part of how our team shows up for each other every day.
