The festive season can be challenging when it comes to resisting temptations, especially with the abundance of delicious food and social events. Here are five tips to help you navigate and survive temptation during this time:
01. Plan Ahead
Plan your meals and snacks in advance, especially before attending gatherings or parties. If you know there will be tempting treats, eat a healthy and satisfying meal before going, so you're less likely to overindulge. Additionally, consider bringing a healthy dish to share, ensuring there's an option that aligns with your goals.
02. Stay Active
Incorporate physical activity into your festive routine. Whether it's going for a walk, hitting the gym, or engaging in active holiday traditions, staying active can help balance the extra calories consumed during celebrations. Exercise also helps manage stress, which can contribute to overeating.
03. Make Rules
It's in our human nature to fall for temptation, but we naturally obey to rules. Sit down and write down the rules you want to follow these holidays. For example:
I will not order dessert when I'm out.
I will always drive to any events, so I'm forced to limit my alcohol intake.
I will always take the stairs instead of the lift, wherever possible. etc.
04. Allow Yourself
Allow yourself to enjoy the festive treats in moderation. Depriving yourself completely may lead to feelings of deprivation and increase the likelihood of overindulging later. Choose smaller portions, savor the flavors, and be mindful of your overall intake without completely restricting yourself from enjoying the festivities.
05. It's OK to say 'no'
While saying "no" can sometimes be challenging, especially if you are a people-pleaser or fear disappointing others, it is a crucial skill for maintaining a healthy and balanced life. Learning to say "no" when needed allows you to focus on what truly matters and contributes to your overall well-being. After all, Christmas is about spending time with your loved ones - make that a priority.
