What a year it’s been for The Rehab Team (TRT)!

Looking back, it’s incredible how much has changed in 2024. As our personal and professional lives have evolved, so has TRT.

Here’s a quick recap of our year…

-After 14 years as a Physiotherapist, including 10 years owning and running multiple clinics, Mike recognised it was time for a career change. From there, he transitioned first into a role as a Medical Rep, and now happily into Health Management.

-With this change, in June, we returned TRT to its roots: a Neurological and Vestibular Physiotherapy service focused on providing expert, community-based rehab right here in Tauranga.

-We also said goodbye to Kylie, Olivia, and our beautiful Papamoa Clinic.

-Kaitlin took on the day-to-day management of TRT, joined by our small but talented team: Nicky and Melissa.

-Over the last six months, TRT has found its new rhythm. With a shift in focus, we’ve been able to slow down, spend more time connecting with our clients, and continue offering the same high-quality care, all while enjoying more time with family. Business growth, social media, and being “on” all the time have taken a backseat as we prioritise what truly matters.

2024 has been a year of change, but TRT is still here. Our doors remain open, and we continue to provide client-centered Neurological Physiotherapy care to the community.

A huge thank you to our clients, our team (past and present), our referrers, and my family for all of your ongoing support this year.

Alright… time to switch back into holiday mode until the 6th! 🌟

We talk…ALOT!

Many people are nervous when they come to their initial Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) appointment with us because they don’t know what to expect.

Of course we have to take a look at you 👀 to start to figure out what we will need to address in your rehabilitation program.

But the most important thing that we do is talk!!! Well, mostly you talk while we listen!

You are the expert when it comes to your body and your FND. Every persons journey with FND is different which means there is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to your rehabilitation plan.

We gain a better understanding of your FND journey, your symptoms, your history.

We look into any possible symptoms triggers, relievers and aggravators. We look into how this is impacting your day to day life.

We chat about your ideal goals of rehab.

We TALK ABOUT FND. It is well known that people who have a better understanding of FND, have better outcomes with their rehabilitation.

We set up a rehabilitation plan based on your FND symptoms.

We get started on your FND treatment - this is dependent on your symptoms but may include graded exercise, sensory reeducation, lifestyle changes, education readings, Autonomic Nervous System regulation and more...

📢Functional Neurological Disorder 📢

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is the second most common cause for a referral to a Neurologist (in the States). Despite this, in New Zealand, FND is a condition that is still misunderstood, both in our communities and within our healthcare systems.

To highlight FND today, of World FND awareness day, here are 7 myths about FND:

Myth One: FND is a diagnosis of exclusion.

Myth Two: Patients have either FND or another Neurological Condition.

Myth Three: FND is all in your head

Myth Four: FND symptoms are voluntary

Myth Five: There is less harm in missing a diagnosis of FND than missing other Neurological Conditions

Myth Six: FND is exclusively a psychological problem.

Myth Seven: You can’t get better if you have FND.

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a common condition. A clear diagnosis provided in a timely manner can have a strong positive impact on improvement of symptoms. Everyone diagnosed with FND should be referred for treatment and rehabilitation. If this is not the case, it is important to find your own FND provider to get the support you need.

Today is a special day! Today is the International day to highlight Parkinson's. Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world with over 12,000 New Zealanders currently living with Parkinson’s.

Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s, there is a lot you can do to help live a good quality life with Parkinson’s. Our Neurological Physiotherapists work alongside clients living with Parkinson's on a weekly basis and we see first hand the benefits regular and consistent physiotherapy can do.

Traditionally, medication has been seen as the main form of treatment for Parkinson’s. However, there is one form of medication that all people living with Parkinson’s can benefit from - Exercise!

Exercise in Parkinson’s is now being viewed as a powerful medicine if received in the right dose, at the right time, by a trained physiotherapist with experience with Parkinson’s management.

Exercise has been found to have neuroprotective and neurorestoration benefits and may result in slowing down the progression of the disease in the very early stages.

Parkinson's specific rehab needs to focus on retraining and maintaining key functional tasks we all do everyday. This includes getting in and out of bed, standing up and sitting down, walking and turning.

With ONE day to go until it is World Parkinson’s Awareness day we thought it was a good time to highlight just how many conditions come under the Parkinsonism Umbrella. There is ALOT…

Whilst each of the diagnoses have distinct symptoms and diagnostic criteria, they all share a common theme.

Parkinsonism is a term used to describe a collection of movement symptoms that include slowness (bradykinesia), stiffness (rigidity), tremor, and balance issues (postural instability). Any condition with these movement symptoms falls under the umbrella of parkinsonism.

The Rehab Team’s Neurological physiotherapists have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to working with clients who have Parkinson’s or fit under the Parkinsonism umbrella. Reach out today to see how we can help.

A big thank you to our lovely admin team to start off the week 😀

Our incredible admin team are the friendly voices you hear on the end of the phone and the first person you see when popping into our clinic. They are also a key factor in keeping our physiotherapist’s day running smoothly.

We would be lost without them, thank you for all that you do, Kylie and Melissa, we truly appreciate it!

💜 TRT Social catch ups: End of Summer BBQ 💜

Earlier this month, Mike and I were thrilled to have our team and their families over for an end of summer BBQ. It was a pleasure cooking for everyone and making the most of the warm weather…long may it last!
