Just like injuries, scars aren’t created equal. And for some, they end up being larger and bigger than we’d ideally like. For example, in some instances “over scarring” may occur cause certain types of scars, such as Keloid – scars which extend beyond the wound, sometimes becoming painful, or Hypertrophic – scars that abnormally rise above the skins surface and grow wider and red with time. Treating these old or existing scars is achieve with effective scar realignment and special revision techniques, such as W’ or ‘Z’ plasties. These are surgical flaps that aim to minimise the visibility of the scar, correct any tension issues and realign their position. Every scar is unique and will have its own nuances to navigate, which is why taking an individual approach to revision is essential to best and safest results for the long-term. Facial skin cancer reconstruction requires a skilled pair of hands. Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma can all form on the face, in many cases due to an over exposure of UV. Facial skin cancer is often spotted early, as changes in moles and new lesions are more visible, and many can be treated with topical or non-surgical treatments, however more complex defects may require surgical reconstruction. Depending on your type, position and complexities of the skin cancer, a skilled cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon will engage specific reconstructive techniques. For example, if you have a skin cancer positioned on the lateral part of your nose, your surgeon may perform a bilobed transposition flap which engages a significant rotational component and incorporates a Z-plasty, making it a prime technique for nasal reconstruction. Facial skin cancer reconstruction is daunting, however, when you journey with a trusted surgeon you can be assured that they’ll focus on retaining form and function. Age + face – when to lift? Knowing when to undergo a facelift isn’t determined by one fixed age. We don’t all share the same anatomy or ageing journey. However, many women will seek a facelift mid-40s/50s with a ‘refresher’ in the mid-to-late 60s. And, typically, a surgical facelift will have a seven-to-10-year lifespan – with secondary facelifts or ‘mini’ lifts thereafter for a refresh. The skin’s elasticity begins to steadily break down from early-40s, so undergoing a facelift earlier – as opposed to later – means there is greater elasticity for better results. Because there a different types of facelift procedures, ensuring you place yourself in the hands of a cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon who specialises in facelifts, is essential. A qualified and trusted surgeon will consider how much volume loss your face has, the damage your skin has sustained, the type of asymmetries your face shows, and how likely you are to follow post-surgical care instructions. Reach for the fat, tick off those body and face goals! Fat grafting – or fat transfer – is fast becoming a popular cosmetic procedure for the face and body. And, for those seeking a more permanent alternative to dermal fillers, it can serve you well. Fat grafting is a two-step procedure. Firstly, fat is harvested via liposuction from a certain area of the body, and then reinjected into specific areas to restore volume. The survivability of the fat cells in their new location is typically between 50% to 90%, but it does vary between individuals. This nonsurgical cosmetic procedure aims to restore shape and form body wide – plumping the cheeks, defining the jawline, volumizing and lifting the breasts and rejuvenating key facial areas. To learn more about fat grafting and how it can help you achieve your face and body goals, speak to our team of trusted cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery specialists, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz

Cheek in or out? Aging takes a toll on the cheek area, but dermal fillers and fat grafting can restore volume, plumpness and smoothen out nasolabial folds. Soft tissue dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid which our bodies naturally produce. Fillers replenish hyaluronic levels and moisture in the cheek area, plumping the cheek area and softening creases. Fat grafting, involves transferring fat cells from another area of the body – such as the hips and thighs – to the cheeks, to provide renewed fullness, and encourage tissue rejuvenation and repair. Inverted ni***es? You’re not alone. Inverted ni***es can happen to everybody. Men might experience inverted ni***es due to ni**le attachment to gynecomastia gland, and women commonly due to short milk ducts, amongst other reasons. Fortunately, most of the time inverted ni***es are treatable. Depending on your own individual circumstances, and taking into consideration breast feeding opportunities in the future, a plastic surgeon may either extend the length of the milk duct or cutting it. For men, it is a similar procedure, where the ducts are released or divided, and tethering to the muscle reduced. Any breast surgical procedure requires a trusted and specialist hand to ensure the safest practise and best results, reach out to our team to learn more about treatment for inverted ni***es, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz

Getting leggy with it! If sculpted legs are on your bucket list for summer – and beyond – a thigh lift, or thighplasty aims to reshape the thighs to achieve a contoured pair of pins. A thigh lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure, so it is performed under general anaesthetic and with a typical recovery period of three-to-four weeks, with a first week of rest to aid swelling and bruising to subside, and rigorous exercise avoided for up to six weeks post-surgery. During the procedure, a cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon will remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the thigh area via incisions, and then lift the remaining skin and tissue to achieve smoother, tighter contours. A thighplasty can gift greater freedom to move, and express and balance your body, and enhance body confidence. Botox, putting the brakes on wrinkles and lines – just consider less is more, and take a tailored approach! Injectable treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are helping people turn back the clock. And, in some cases, if you begin using appearance medicine treatments earlier, they can prevent deep seated facial lines from developing. However, unlike the ‘frozen’ face of yesteryear, approaching injectables conservatively, ensures both softening of lines, tightening and re-texturising, without risk of overcompensation of certain facial muscles. For example, too much Botox in the forehead over an extended period could result in muscles becoming too weak, so they start recruiting surrounding muscles – a squinting nose and side of the nose – to make facial expressions. To avoid this, enlisting a qualified and experienced cosmetic appearance medicine nurse or plastic surgeon to tailor an appearance medicine plan directly to your facial needs and goals is essential. They’ll have the expertise and skillset to determine the best injectable pathway for you and you alone – a trusted hand and the safest approach ensures individual results, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz

If your breasts have headed southward, or beginning to look droopy, you’re not alone. Life can throw breasts a few curb balls – age, childbirth, weight loss or weight gain, hormones, the list goes on. Depending on your age, stage of life and individual body goals, your breasts may require a lift and implant, or a lift and fat grafting – where fat is taken from other areas of the body and reinjected into the breasts. If you have lost a substantial volume, a cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon may recommend an implant combined with a lift to restore fullness and shape and correct lax tissue. As for the ni**le areas, which might have stretched, a plastic surgeon may perform a mastopexy to raise breast tissue and reposition the ni**le. For lopsided, smaller breasts, an implant and lift can correct asymmetries. Before undergoing a breast lift, or any breast augmentation procedure, ensuring you physically healthy, are a healthy weight, a nonsmoker and lead a healthy lifestyle are all factors to be considered. Whatever your breast goals, journey with a qualified breast surgeon who has your individual needs in focus, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz

Weight loss can feel like a reset, giving you a new lease on life and freeing you up to move, play and spend time doing more of the things you love. However, weight loss after dieting or bariatric surgery (a gastric sleeve or gastric band) can result in excess skin and empty folds around the tummy, face, neck, arms, chests, breasts and back. This excess skin can hamper clothing choices, effect overall body image and confidence, cause rashes and in some cases cause problems with mobility. Fortunately, body contouring – or body lift procedures, such as a lower or upper body lift, breast lift, back lift or thigh lift – can sculpt, balance and improve body symmetry. During surgery, a qualified cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon will remove excess skin and contour remaining to your body proportions, this may also be combined with liposuction procedure to remove any additional fat. Cosmetic surgery isn’t for everyone; however, an ideal body contouring candidate will have reached their ideal weight and have that weight remained stable for at least six months. They’ll also be of good health, a nonsmoker, and realistic about body expectations. Every person’s body is unique to them, so approaching any cosmetic surgical procedure with an individual eye and view to enhance natural beauty, ensures best results. Summer bodies are made in winter! The cooler months are the best time to target the tummy, breasts and stubborn areas. And, abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck, breast augmentation or body lift procedures, such as a thigh lift or upper arm lift, all come to the party! The cooler – more controlled – winter temperature aids minimising post-op swelling. As for sunlight hours, harsh rays in summer can darken or lighten scars, but in winter they are milder, and we’re less likely to expose our skin too.
In winter we layer clothing, so it’s the ideal time to add compression bandages to the mix. Typically, recovering from abdominoplasty, a thigh lift or breast surgery will involve stitches, bruising and swelling, which is why compression bandages are needed for support. These help to reduce the risk of seroma (excess serous fluid filling a pocket under the skin), aid comfort and reduce swelling; and provide greater body contouring. In summer, covering up those bandages can be more difficult and painstaking – not to mention hot, with bandages locking in that heat – another win-win for winter.
Keen on keeping your surgery under wraps? Winter is the best time to excuse yourself from social occasions and step out in spring with stitches removed, swelling down and not a bandage to a seen.

Liposuction or Coolsculpting? Is the timing right! When it comes to body contouring goals, time factors into decision making. If you’re considering liposuction, specifically for the abdominal region, hips or thighs, it can take up to six weeks for swelling to subside, and compression garments should be worn for at least a month post-surgery. Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting yields long-term results gradually and you may require up to six treatments, performed across several months. And, depending on the treatment area and density of fat, changes can be seen within weeks or a few months, with the most dramatic changes after two months. Both liposuction and CoolSculpting are considered low risk procedures, but they do require a qualified hand to perform them. Before signing up to any cosmetic or body contouring procedure, ensuing you have a one-on-one consultation with an experienced surgeon gives you a more definitive idea of which one is best for you, and what kind of results and recovery process you can expect. Eye spy! One of the most popular facial rejuvenation procedures is eyelid surgery – or blepharoplasty. An upper or lower – or both – blepharoplasty restore balance and definition. Upper eyelid surgery removes sagging skin, and excess fatty tissue and muscle, minus any ‘pulling back’ to achieve lift and contour, lower lid surgery removes bags and puffiness from around your eyes, to refine and diminish heavy drooping and wrinkled skin. Upper eyelid surgery typically has a shorter recovery period than lower eyelid surgery, within by the two-weeks swelling should subside. Lower eyelid surgery recovery may take between two-and-four weeks. Taking a delicate approach to eyelid restoration is essential, so reach for a gentle hand and trusted hand in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery to discuss your eye and facial rejuvenation goals, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz

Lose the jowls, bring back the neck! Reducing jowl lines and contouring the neck isn’t limited to one cosmetic procedure – there is both surgical and injectable treatments to rid the sag and restore firmness and volume.
Non-surgically, appearance medicine treatments like Botox and dermal fillers perform well in the neck and lower face area. Botox can be injected into vertical neck bands to relax muscles and minimise wrinkles, dermal fillers can restore volume, and Belkyra injections into the neck and jawline can rid the double-chin, enhancing and sculpting the jaw.
Surgically, a lower rhytidectomy – or neck lift – can put the brakes on sagging and improve the signs of ageing. During surgery, a cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon may redistribute fat from the jowls and neck, repositioning tissue underlying the neck skin and tighten the platysma muscle – a broad muscle in the neck. Skin is then re-draped over the contours and trimmed. Whatever your neck or facial goals, you have options, ensure you reach for a trusted team of cosmetic and appearance medicine experts, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz

Exercise and Breast Surgery – How soon is too soon? If you’ve undergone breast augmentation, be it a breast lift, breast reduction, breast lift, or all three, you may be wondering how soon you can start exercising again? Everybody is different and recovery times will vary. But studies have shown that if you were active before undergoing surgery, it may help with reducing surgical complications. And, added to this, studies have also highlighted that those who exercise pre- and post-surgery can receive a satisfaction boost in endorphins. So, when can you begin exercising again? Your surgeon may recommend a walk straight after surgery, at two-to-three-weeks, pick up the pace and include light exercise, and at four-to-six-weeks add in more strenuous exercises. Recovery times will vary from individual to individual, so listening to your body, following the guidance of your plastic surgeon is essential to best results and best recovery journey. Winter Skin Cancer Check – Roger that! Sun damage that causes cancer is cumulative – just because the temperature’s dropping, doesn’t mean the sun’s stopped damaging. However, locking in a skin check in the winter, when our skin is showing less of the normal signs of sun exposure, makes identifying any changes in moles and lesions easier. Our most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). SCC are typically reddish, crusty lesions which can feel tender to touch – fair skinned people are likely candidates, and men are twice as likely to develop SCC lesions. BBC lesions are sometimes pearly in appearance, or pale and waxy in texture, and are generally slower growing, but SCC and melanoma – our deadliest skin cancer – can grow quickly, with some cases of melanoma becoming invasive within three months. Don’t leave your skin to chance, lock in a skin check with one of our skin cancer experts, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz

Natural vision! Today’s facelift is no pulled back procedure! Forget the ‘wind swept’ facelift that dominated through previous decades, today’s facelift techniques attune a much more natural vision. Whether you’re in your 40s, 50s or over, achieving more natural facial results, begins by choosing a trusted and qualified cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, who's experienced at utilising techniques that incorporate the fat and sheaths of tissue underneath the skin. As opposed to ‘pulling back’ and ‘cutting away’ skin, a reputable plastic surgeon will aim to lift and reposition underlying muscles. This involves using stiches to tighten the connective tissue enveloping the muscles of the midface and neck, or alternately, the underside of the muscles. Pre-surgery assessment of volume loss, the damage your skin has sustained and the type of asymmetries your face shows is also essential to achieving natural results. This will determine whether additional volumising treatments such as dermal fillers or fat grafting are also required to enhance and rejuvenate. Any cosmetic surgical procedure is a big deal, placing yourself – and face – in the hands of trusted cosmetic and appearance medicine specialists, www.bayplasticsurgery.co.nz
