As the weather cools, it’s common to see an increase in coughs, colds, and other respiratory illnesses 🤧

Many of these can be safely managed at home with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter treatments. Simple steps like regular handwashing, staying home when unwell, and keeping up to date with vaccinations can also make a big difference.

If your symptoms are severe, not improving, or you’re unsure what to do, our reception team can help guide you on whether an appointment is needed.

We're now located at 56 Seventh Ave.

In case you missed it - we've now moved from Promed House to Seventh Ave.

There's no access from Cameron Road onto Seventh Ave, so you'll need to head around to Edgecumbe Road then loop back down to our clinic on Seventh. There's plenty of on-street parking, with a few parking spots out back.

We'll advise you when you book your appointment if you'll be at our Seventh or Fifth Ave clinic.

We're excited to share our new space with you. 🏠

03/03/2026

World Obesity Day, held each year on the 4th of March, is an opportunity to raise awareness that obesity is not simply about willpower or personal choice — it is a complex, chronic medical condition. Research consistently shows that body weight is influenced by a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental exposures, social determinants of health, psychological factors, and powerful biological drivers such as gut hormones that regulate hunger, satiety, and metabolism. Modern science recognises obesity as a disease involving dysregulation of appetite pathways and energy balance — not a failure of motivation.

At 5th Avenue Family Practice, our nurse practitioner–led weight loss clinic provides a comprehensive and compassionate approach to care. We begin with a thorough consultation to understand your medical history, current health conditions, medications, lifestyle factors, and personal goals. From there, we work alongside you to develop an individualised plan that may include practical nutrition guidance, realistic lifestyle strategies, behavioural support, and medical optimisation of related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnoea.

For some patients, evidence-based weight loss medications can play an important role in regulating appetite and improving metabolic health. For others, bariatric surgery may be an appropriate and life-changing option, and we can provide assessment and referral when indicated. Importantly, obesity management is not a short-term fix — it requires ongoing follow-up, monitoring, and encouragement. Our clinic provides continued support to help patients navigate plateaus, adjust treatment plans, and maintain progress over time.

On World Obesity Day, we encourage open conversations and reduce stigma. Obesity is complex — but with the right medical support, understanding, and partnership, meaningful and sustainable change is possible. If you are ready to explore your options, our team at 5th Avenue Family Practice is here to help.

Ka hari te Rāmere Whānau 😊

Today's whakataukī acknowledges our belief that collaboration is important in achieving equitable health outcomes for our patients.

We have previously co-designed with our patients, achieving successful outcomes that allowed us to reflect on our practice, identify areas for improvement, and ensure that our patients feel empowered to make informed choices about their health.
