Ngā mihi ki a Mererina mō tō whakaaro me tō tautoko i tēnei kaupapa 💛

Meet Mererina (73), one of our much-loved regulars here at The Centre for Health
She recently shared some beautiful thoughts about her journey and what keeps her coming back to TCFH.

What motivated you to choose TCFH?
To improve my mental and physical health — TCFH offered the best environment and support.

In what ways has your experience with TCFH impacted your health or quality of life?
I’m now motivated to get out of bed early (5:30am!) every day to come down and be with a caring and positive group of people.

Which aspects of our care or services have had the most positive impact on your health journey?
The personalised, intimate care that the Centre shows to each of its members. The team is always willing to listen and support all aspects of my health and wellbeing.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering our services but is unsure if it's right for them?
Give it a try — make this an investment in your life.

Our team, together with have been taking part in Te Kōwhai Ka Ngaora – the Flourishing Mindset Programme. Check out a few photos from yesterday’s rōpū.

🌟If you think this might be something your community or workplace would enjoy or benefit from, We'd love to hear from you!🌟

The Flourishing Mindset Programme is a transformative initiative rooted in the
ultimate aspiration of Māori health - attaining a state of flourishing. It marks a
significant shift towards a strength-based approach to hauora. At its core, the
programme recognises the infinite potential of Māori and aims to facilitate the
realisation of this potential in tangible and impactful ways.

Central to the programme's philosophy is the distinction between a 'coping' mindset
and a 'flourishing' mindset. The former, often associated with a deficit or problem-
centered approach, focuses on managing challenges, avoiding negative outcomes,
and striving for a sense of 'normal, healthy functioning.' On the other hand, the
'flourishing' mindset takes a solution-focused approach. It emphasises identifying and nurturing individual and environmental strengths, attitudes, and values, thereby
inspiring people to envision a reality beyond their current circumstances.

Through workshops, discussions, and interactive activities, the Flourishing Mindset
Programme seeks to instil this transformative mindset shift. Participants are
encouraged to embrace their strengths, cultivate resilience, and explore opportunities for growth and wellbeing. By adopting a 'flourishing' mindset, individuals not only enhance their own lives but also contribute positively to whānau and society, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and transformation.

Ultimately, the Flourishing Mindset Programme is a catalyst for change, paving the
way for Māori to thrive, flourish, and unlock their full potential in every aspect of life. It represents a profound commitment to holistic health and the realisation of aspirations for a brighter, more resilient future. As the whakatauki that describes the programme attests; Nurture the seed and it will flourish. Tihei Mauri Ora

We sat down with Nepia to hear what he thinks of The Centre for Health. Read his story below.

“I initially came to TCFH with with my friend to support him, back in 2021. I soon realised this place would be good for my knee, I hadn’t had a knee cap since 1972.
The team at the Centre helped me build up the strength in my knee so I could have an operation on my knee which I got 18 months ago!

I keep coming to TCFH now because of the team, they know what they’re doing, they design personalised programmes for us as individuals. The social aspect for me is really important, I have met all walks of life – it is so diverse here. Sometimes I just come in for a chat.

To me, what it is all about, is being able to see the changes in my blood pressure and heart rate before and after exercise. I like monitoring it and knowing where I’m at. And also the encouragement around nutrition and eating well, I use a lot of the Kai ā Nuku recipes.

That really sums it up for me, I’ll be here until I die I’d say.”

✨ Introducing Tana - The Centre Manager ✨
E le sili le ta'i, nai lo le tapua'i
The people supporting are just as important as those who are working

Tana is of Samoan descent from the beautiful villages of Saleapaga and Lalomanu in Apia. With his wife being from here in Tauranga and having two beautiful young girls, they both wanted their girls to grow up on their whenua surrounded by their cousins and whanau. Relocation was an easy decision to make.

He comes from a retail management background predominantly in pharmacy and is experienced in building, leading, training and motivating cross-functional teams while administering overall operations and staff performance. One of Tana's highlights was Winners of NZ Outstanding Pharmacy Team Award supported by Pfizer, Pharmacy Today and ProPharm and later on received Top Sales Award.

Tana is excited and ready to serve his community. The philosophical message of the Centre resonates with Tana's core values; built on a culture of whanau, where teams interact with each other as they would with their families and embrace clients in the same manner.
