A X I T T E S T I N G

In clinic, we’re always aiming to figure out the “injury driver”, or simply put, why has the injury occurred in the first place.

Sometimes this will be because of a clear incident, but other times aches and pains can creep up on us. In these situations, it’s important to look at how a persons muscles are activating and where a person is loading.

AXIT testing, as seen in the photo, is an awesome way to get accurate statistics on a persons strength and a persons rate of force development (RFD). It tells us if a certain muscle isn’t firing quickly, or has less strength than we’d expect.

AXIT testing allows us to figure out exact imbalances and create specific plans to help patients move forward with their functional goals!

Book in with any of the Physio’s and see if this would be helpful for you 😁💪🏼☺️

Whilst Sam enters his fourth week of placement here at Back In Action, we thought we’d share some of the valuable information he’s found regarding improving myofascial health.

Does your body ever feel tight and like foam rolling and stretching isn’t quite helping? That may be because your fascia (layers of tissue that cover muscles), is dehydrated causing it to tighten and constrict.

You may notice in the above image created by Sam, that men are recommended to have roughly 4L of water per day and women 3L - this is to aid in hydrating the fascia, preventing tension.

See the poll below to answer if you think you meet this water intake quota!

Sam has officially joined us for his final placement of his physiotherapy degree. He’s been studying through AUT and has found a passion for sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Sam’s worked with Greerton Development all through the 2025 season, which was a perfect transition into Back in Action Physiotherapy due to our involvement with the club.

We look forward to spending the next 8-weeks with him. Make sure to say hi when you see him around the clinic 😁👋🏼

With Leanna being the Lead Physiotherapist of the , Tyler and I had the incredible opportunity to support the team during their training camp in Mount Maunganui.

We offered recovery treatments including massage, cupping, and dry needling to players seeking hands-on support.

It was a valuable insight into physiotherapy in a high-performance environment, and a privilege to work alongside such driven and inspiring wahine toa 💪🏼🏏

Camp #2 this week is a smaller camp back in Lincoln We are preparing for a training camp in India early August. Then we head to Dubai in September for some preparation games and then back to India in October for the 50 over World Cup.

We have done lots of planning and preparation in the off season. Now it’s just making sure the girls are working towards their performance goals, having time with the coaches and staying injury free!

Am hoping our heat acclimatisation strategies work well for me too 🥵

Every day is different and I get the opportunity to make some positive contributions to this great group of athletes. Luckily I have such a capable team working hard back in the clinic. 🙏

C A D E N C E

Cadence is the number of steps you take in 1 min and we usually monitor this in our running population. You can also think of it as your step rate.

It’s a good idea to have a look and see what yours is. We know that runners that have a cadence around 180 spm have less injuries and run more efficiently.

If it is too low, you tend to have an over stride and strong breaking forces as your heel hits the ground (see image).
This puts more stress on your bones and body and makes you work harder when you are running.

When you are trying to improve your cadence we suggest slowly bringing it up over a number of runs - even 5 steps per minute can make a difference. A common mistake is to just run faster so you want to try and run at your same pace but with more steps.

It will feel really awkward at first but your body will adapt over time and ultimately your performance will improve. Stick at it.

Big congratulations to and Tracy on their graduation. Whilst they finished their degree last year, today was the formal ceremony to celebrate their hard work and achievements.

Tracy was also awarded the Excellence in Paediatric Award, whilst juggling being a mum to 4 kids and finishing her degree.

We are so proud of you both and are lucky to have such caring, committed and skilled therapists come and work in our clinic.

attending a 2 day course to up skill in all things knee rehabilitation.

She’s learning the latest on ACL research and return to play guidelines.

It’s so important to have some structure around return to sport and play to help identify any areas that need more focus. It also helps give you confidence that when you return to sport you know you have done all the hard work and prepared correctly to prevent re injury.

Keep an eye out for some more interesting info about all things knees over these next few days.

Was such a great night for racing and so special to be able to watch all these athletes smashing their mile times.

leading the men’s race and supporting .ruthe to be the first 15 year old to run sub 4 for the mile in 3:58:35. You can see how proud he was at the finish to be part of his success.
kirkwood big congratulations on fostering this cool crew of runners who all have so much fun each week and are genuinely so happy for each others successes. 9 out of 15 racing in the men’s event were under his Tauranga coaching and 3 in the women’s.

Congrats also to (massive PB), (close to sub4), .murray4, and the girls all turning up too with (massive PB), and .ruthe (PB).

It’s a privilege to support these young athletes through their careers and help keep them injury free, strong and hopefully faster!! The future of NZ middle distance running is bright.

We are lucky to have back with the team.

She is no stranger to many of you with her work as a student in clinic in past years. She has also spent many hours on the rugby sideline with our teams over the last few years.

Tyler is helping both and at different times over this season as well.

“I’m fortunate to have been born and bred in the beautiful Tauranga Moana. I have always been drawn to work that is important in our community, which is why a position in my hometown is so meaningful to me.

Outside of mahi, you’ll find me at the beach, as a Surf Lifeguard of 11 seasons, keeping active, and cooking, all with Spotify on in the background. “
