Pia Mirimiri - First I will say that my name isn’t Pia. Ko Liv Toku Ingoa. My name is Liv Muru.
Pia - means ‘apprentice’ in Maori.
Mirimiri - means to rub, caress and massage in Te Reo. It also means to mollify and appease. To mollify any anger and to appease any anxiety and emotions that no longer serve you.
Pia Mirimiri is a massage apprenticeship, healing apprenticeship and a life apprenticeship.
At Pia Mirimiri being an apprentice in Mirimiri means that I have gone back to my roots and understood what touch, healing and life means to me. I have then met other traditional healers who have bent and broken those understandings and taught me new techniques and approaches to this work and life. Now I keep meeting tuoro (clients) who force me to alter those techniques and approaches and create new ones to best serve them with what they need. Because I will keep meeting more healers (all people are healers) and tuoro I will always be in this process of learning, understanding, bending, breaking and creating. This is the process of whakapapa - to know where you come from in order to know where you are going. This is the process that Pia Mirimiri intends to stay on.
The Mirimiri
Mirimiri is a traditional Maori healing modality that involves working with the body. Mirimiri is an aid to Romiromi and it is easy to understand if we think of Romiromi as deep tissue massage and Mirimiri to be a less painful version. Most techniques have been passed down by tohunga (gifted people) to their whanau for generations. A Mirimiri session won’t always be the same because it tries to heal the past, the present and for the future. These all require different vibrations to enter and leave your body. It is not uncommon for things from your past to come up in a session and cause a wave of energy or emotion over you. Breath and trust helps these vibrations and emotions leave the body. Talking or in silence Mirimiri uses the natural environment and nothing but ourselves to heal. The use of hot stones may be necessary, the use of Karakia is always necessary and the use of wai (water), rakau (wood) and kohatu (pounamu) can be helpful in a treatment.
Mirimiri is hollistic and aims to heal all aspects of your being.
Mirimiri is in our whakapapa. Our ancestors would Mirimiri to heal their Hinengaro (mind), Wairua (spirit), tinana (body) and whanau (family & environment).
