👨‍⚕️ Meet Dr Mark Saunders

Dr Mark Saunders has dedicated his career to helping people see more clearly. Over the years, he has performed more than 10,000 Lens Exchanges and over 200 Corneal Transplants, as well as thousands of other eye procedures.

What drew him to ophthalmology was the combination of science and impact, using modern techniques to make a real difference in how people experience the world.

Mark has also shared his expertise beyond New Zealand, performing over 500 cataract surgeries as a volunteer in underdeveloped countries. It’s work he describes as a privilege, helping restore sight where access to care is limited.

Outside the clinic, Mark enjoys life with his wife and two children. He’s a keen runner who has completed marathons in Africa, China, Greenland, the Arctic Circle, New York, Boston and London. Closer to home, he enjoys fishing and golf with family and friends.

Even a slight blur in your vision can mean more than you think.

Changes often happen slowly....

So slowly, you might not even notice at first. But small shifts in clarity can be early signs of cataracts, glaucoma, or other eye conditions that need specialist care.

👁 Don’t ignore the signs. If things aren’t as sharp as they used to be, it’s worth getting checked.

Optometrists are a great first step for routine eye checks and glasses, but there are times when your eyes need specialist care.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor trained to diagnose, treat and perform surgery for complex eye conditions.

It’s worth booking with a specialist if you have:

Sudden or severe vision changes 🌫️

Flashes, floaters, or a dark shadow in your vision⚡

A cataract diagnosis or trouble with glare/night driving

Ongoing eye pain, redness, or inflammation 🔴

Concerns about your child’s vision 🧒

A family history of glaucoma or other serious eye conditions

Getting seen early can help protect your vision and prevent problems from worsening.

👁️ Your eyes deserve expert care.

👁️ Eye Health Spotlight: When vision changes slowly.

You might not notice it at first. Just a bit of glare, some trouble with night driving, or needing brighter light to read.

But slow changes in your vision can be the sign of something more.

Cataracts, glaucoma and macular conditions often progress quietly in the background.

If your eyesight just doesn’t feel as sharp as it used to, it’s worth getting checked.

🧑‍⚕️ Specialist care means we look deeper and catch problems earlier.

We were delighted to welcome local optometrists to our recent CPD evening at the beautiful St Amand Events Venue in Tauranga.

👁️ Dr Kent Chow shared fresh insights on Conjunctivitis: More Than Meets the Eye, reminding us that what can seem straightforward often has hidden complexities.

👁️ Dr Andrew Thompson followed with an engaging presentation on Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) — showing how this non-invasive imaging technique gives us a deeper look at retinal health.

As always, these evenings aren’t just about education. They’re about connecting with colleagues, sharing ideas and strengthening the collaborative approach that ensures patients across our region continue to receive world-class eye care.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us. We're looking forward to the next event, coming soon!

Kids don’t always know their vision is blurry.

Children with poor eyesight often adapt - squinting, tilting their heads, or sitting closer to the board - but they might never complain.

Eye checks can pick up things like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus early, when treatment is most effective.

👶 Early care can make a big difference later in life.

👁️ What is Uveitis?

Uveitis is inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, and it can come on quickly or develop over time.

It often causes:
🔴 Red or painful eyes
🌟 Sensitivity to light
🌫️ Blurred vision or floaters

Uveitis can affect one or both eyes, and in some cases, it can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated.

Because it can be linked to other underlying health issues, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and specialist care.

At Tauranga Eye Specialists, our team is experienced in managing both straightforward and complex cases of uveitis.

Helping protect your vision with tailored treatment and close monitoring.
