Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora is still fining local government bodies $200,000 for not adding fluoride to their water supplies, yet even CNN in the US is stating it's a neurotoxin.

"A rigorous nine-year research review looking at the relationship between fluoride and intelligence in children concludes that as fluoride levels rise, IQ drops.

Every 1 part per million increase in fluoride in urine — a way of measuring all the sources of fluoride a person consumes — was associated with a roughly 1 point drop in a child’s IQ score, the review concluded.

Although an impact like that may seem small for any one person, on a wider scale, the study authors note, the consequences are significant, especially for those who are vulnerable because of risk factors like poverty and nutrition.

“A 5-point decrease in a population’s IQ would nearly double the number of people classified as intellectually disabled,” they write in their conclusions."

What foods do you break your fast with?

Shared from Ancestral Nourishment: Let’s dissociate breakfast food from strictly cereals, toast and fruit. Breakfast is simply food that breaks your natural fast overnight.

If health optimization is your goal, nutrient-dense, protein and fat-centric food should be at the core. This means embracing and prioritizing grass fed meat and eggs, full-fat raw dairy and supplementing with overt carbohydrates to suit your energy requirements. This might include ripe, seasonal fruit, raw honey, cooked roots, long-fermented sourdough or on occasion, other fermented grains like oats.

When we speak of protein and fat, we are largely referring to animal sources as they are the densest and most bio-available sources of all the essential amino acids and fatty acids critical to optimal health.

Some benefits of a protein-centric meal to break your fast:

👉 Metabolism: Protein causes the largest rise in TEF (thermic effect of food) as it requires the most energy of the three macronutrients for digestion, absorption and processing. In turn, increasing metabolic rate by 20-30%.

👉 Satiety: A higher protein diet increases thermogenesis which augments energy expenditure but also increases satiety. Additionally, protein surpasses our appetite-stimulating hormone, ghrelin.

👉 Glucose regulation: Unlike a carb-dominant meal which would spike your blood sugar, protein has no effect on blood sugar in isolation. I always eat carbs with a source of protein; as this slows the digestive process.

So break away from the idea that your first meal of the day has to look like the stock-standard, carb-centric “breakfast” and embrace leftover dinners, pan fry a steak, roast some bone marrow to have on your sourdough instead of jam…

The terms breakfast, lunch and dinner don’t exist in our kitchen. Eat when you’re hungry. Whatever that should look like and in what portion, your body will tell you. More often than not, however, our bodies want animal foods and animal fat. How do you know? Because you will feel satiated, energized and clear of mind; all the hallmarks of a nourished body.

ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES LINKED WITH DEPRESSION - Study in comments

Clinicians and researchers have long suspected a connection between oral contraceptives and depression. I’ve seen that over and over in my practice, and I’ve discussed it repeatedly with colleagues.

A new, landmark study that followed almost a quarter of a million women from UK Biobank from birth to menopause found that women who began to use contraceptive pills as teenagers had a 130% higher incidence of symptoms of depression.

Women who began using contraception as adults had a 92% higher risk of depression. These are not small increases.

It’s important for women and healthcare providers to be aware of these potential risks and to observe carefully for symptoms of depression when taking/prescribing oral contraceptives—and to explore alternative methods of contraception if necessary.

A simple way to slow cognitive decline

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. More than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is now the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S., and 2 in 3 Americans will struggle with cognitive decline by age 70. In conventional medicine, the common belief is there’s nothing we can do to prevent cognitive disorders.

But recent research tells a different story. For example, a landmark study last year found that people over age 65 who took a multivitamin daily for 3 years slowed age-related cognitive decline by 60% (or about 1.8 years)!

One simple change—boosting nutrient levels—led to improvements in global cognition, episodic memory, and executive function and slowed cognitive decline by almost 2 years.

Nutrient deficiencies are far more common than previously thought.

A new study published in November of last year found that 56% of preschool-aged children and 69% of nonpregnant women of reproductive age suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. This amounts to ~370 million preschool-aged children and up to 2 billion women worldwide.

This is an urgent and serious public health crisis, as the authors of the study point out: “Deficiencies in iron, vitamin A, zinc, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and iodine can each have severe consequences, including increased susceptibility to infections, birth defects, blindness, reduced growth, cognitive impairment, decreased school performance and work productivity, and even death.”

This problem affects everyone, but nutrient deficiencies are especially dangerous for children, teens, women of reproductive age, the elderly, and people with chronic illness because the demand for nutrients and the consequences of a shortfall are higher in those populations.

Overcoming Infertility.

Begin with the possibility...

Seven years ago my husband and I couldn’t have a baby. We dearly wanted a baby to complete our blended family, we had so much more love to give. We thought we fixed the problem under medical expertise (5 rounds of ICSI IVF). But still no pregnancy. Such heartache, frustration, anger, sadness! But then after talking to some similarly situated women, I began to ask WHY.

WHY can’t we have a baby. WHY can’t other women have a baby.

With no obvious medical reasons found, the term given to this group of us was “unexplained” I began to look further into the possibility of WHY. It began with my body. Did I treat mine well? Did I provide it with all the vitamins and minerals to be healthy? Did I eat well? While I thought I was healthy - I was far from it.
