Mōrena, let’s get real for a moment….
Who’s holding you accountable… if it’s not you?
Take a moment to sit with that.
Are you being honest with yourself about what needs to be done…
or are you waiting for someone else, or something else, to step in and do it for you?
Because the truth is — no one is coming to create that space for you.
No one is coming to build the discipline for you.
That’s your responsibility.
And I say that with aroha.
Too often, we wait until we are standing at the edge —
in crisis, in pain, in burnout —
before we decide to prioritise our hauora.
I’ve been there myself.
It took losing parts of my physical and mental freedom
to realise that I had to start showing up for myself properly.
Not just when it felt good… but especially when it didn’t.
Because it’s not about finding time.
It’s about creating it.
It might look like getting up earlier before the whare wakes.
Going to bed a little sooner.
Putting systems in place that hold you — even on the days you don’t feel like showing up.
Because motivation will come and go…
but discipline will carry you.
And here’s something to reflect on —
when our health reaches a crisis point, we make time.
We attend appointments.
We sit in waiting rooms.
We rearrange our lives.
So why don’t we offer ourselves that same level of priority before we get there?
This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about prevention.
It’s about responsibility.
Because your tamariki are watching.
Your whānau are watching.
And when they see you choose yourself —
choose your wellbeing, your balance, your discipline —
you give them permission to do the same.
That’s the ripple effect.
That’s the real mahi.
So ask yourself again…
Who’s holding you accountable?
And if the answer is no one —
then maybe it’s time to step into that role for yourself.
With honesty.
With discipline.
With aroha.
Healing isn’t always fun, rainbows and slow breathing, in fact most of the time it’s hard, dark and painful and it sucks!, but when we take time to sit in these spaces, this is where the real growth happens.
