I canโ€™t believe it is New Years Eve!! As we are heading into a new year, Iโ€™ve been taking some time to reflect on what made this past year so memorable. Itโ€™s been a whirlwind of experiences, growth, and connectionโ€”and I wanted to share some of my highlights with you!

This year, Iโ€ฆ

โ€ข Shared beautiful days with my daughter in Christchurch, catching up with a dear friend.
โ€ข Started playing indoor netballโ€”itโ€™s been so much fun to try something new and such a great workout each week!
โ€ข Presented a workshop at the OTNZ-WNA conference, which was such a fulfilling experience.
โ€ข Engaged with wonderful people at the Active Healthcare Expo.
โ€ข Spent three amazing weeks in Holland, including a magical three days in Paris with my family.
โ€ข Completed courses in Life Coaching and ACT for People Pleasing and Perfectionism.
โ€ข Connected with inspiring health professionals through coaching, supervision, and mentoring.
โ€ข Attended my first yoga retreatโ€”absolute bliss!
โ€ข Walked a total of 2,789 kmโ€”each step contributing to my well-being.
โ€ข Started a part-time role at the Artificial Limb Service in Hamiltonโ€”such rewarding work.
โ€ข Dabbled in creativity at a pottery workshop.
โ€ข Volunteered at my kidsโ€™ school breakfast club and with the Kakepuku Mountain Conservation Society.

Looking back on this list, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunities and connections this year brought. It reminds me of the power of ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, which will be my guiding words for the new year.

High stress and burnout are all too common, especially in healthcare or when balancing multiple roles.

Itโ€™s so easy to put our own needs on the back burner, but the truth is that a simple check-in with ourselves can make a world of difference.

When we give ourselves the space to pause, even briefly, we can gain insight in what is showing up for us in the moment and also gives us insight into what we need most.

I recently returned from a trip to the Netherlands, where I had the chance to reconnect with family, friends, and visit familiar places. It was 5 years ago since the last time we were able to make this trip. Being back with and around people who I have spent so much time with in the past and being surrounded by familiar places, it brought back so many memories.

The trip back to my home country made me very aware of change. People and places in my memory hadnโ€™t changed, however in reality, everything and everyone had changed, including myself!

We all navigate so many changes and transitions in life, whether personal or professional. Change often brings excitement, though also resistance, and uncertainty. Personally, change can feel very unsettling. Over time I have learned that there are things that help me ground myself during times of change.

I have learned that managing change and transitions, comes down to the way I talk to myself during change and the acknowledgement that we all experience change on a daily basis. It is human nature to feel a sense of resistance towards change!
Finding quiet time to process thoughts and experiences and being aware of what is showing up for me, helps with settling my overactive mind. And really getting back to basics with looking after myself, paying attention to what I eat, drink, my movement, engaging in activities and connections I enjoy and making sure I get quality sleep.

This week I had the privilege to present an interactive workshop at the OTNZ-WNA clinical workshops in Hamilton to a group of amazing OTs who allowed themselves to take some time out to reflect, be present and connect to enhance their own wellbeing!

Such a great experience and awesome to see and connect with some old colleagues as well as making new connections!

This becomes a recipe for depression, anxiety, and often leads to burnout!

A lot of the time people pleasing is a learned behavior. The roots found in our childhoods through our experiences and social conditioning.

The good news is:

There are specific skills you can learn so that people pleasing does not stand in your way to live a healthy joyful life.

Some of these skills include:
- Growing self-awareness
- Managing uncomfortable feelings effectively
- Assertiveness & Setting Boundaries
- Self-compassion
- Taking value-based action

Balancing your own needs with the needs of others is crucial.

Whether it is trying a breathing technique, implementing mini breaks in our day, unplugging from technology, engaging in a new activity that helps us ground, or practicing gratitude and reflection.

Remember, you donโ€™t have to overhaul your entire routine at once.

Start smallโ€”pick one thing that resonates with you and incorporate them into your day. If it still feels too hard, make it even smaller!

Set up your environment in a way that will remind you to try the new routine.

Find a moment in your schedule when you are more likely to be able to do the new routine/ habit!

Over time, these small habits can lead to big changes in how you manage stress and find moments of calm.

I am super excited to announce that I will be hosting a 90-minute workshop โ€œBalancing Act: Preventing burnout and nurturing wellbeing in Occupational Therapyโ€, at the upcoming OT Clinical Workshops, "Acknowledge the Past, Learn for the Future"!

The OT Clinical workshops will be held in Hamilton New Zealand on the 23rd โ€“ 25th of October and is filled with a huge variety of workshops which will offer immersive learning, new insights, practice enhancing theories and networking opportunities. Your ticket grants access to ALL sessions, food provided on the days and includes a ticket to the 75th Anniversary Celebration on the evening of 24th October.

With endless to-do lists and responsibilities, itโ€™s tough to switch off our brains. Even when we do try to relax, our minds race, replaying the day or worrying about tomorrow. Technology keeps us tethered to work, even outside of our regular hours. Weโ€™re rarely given a moment to simply โ€œbe.โ€ The noise of notifications, emails, and social media adds to the mental clutter and our overstimulated minds.

Many of us are conditioned to be "on" all the time. Weโ€™ve built routines that prioritize productivity over rest and to react instantly to any demand and changing those habits takes intention and practice.

Often, the stress we carry goes deeper than our daily tasks. Feelings of inadequacy/ not being good enough, fear of failure, or unresolved trauma can prevent us from truly letting go, even during downtime.
