It's all about the nervous system ๐Ÿง  After teaching many forms of yoga for 10 years (Hatha, Yin, Dynamic Flow) I now feel passionately about the benefits of slow mindful yoga. It's a game changing revolution in the world of yoga that I believe takes yoga out of the fitness box and puts it where it should really be. A mind/body/spirit practice that can change your brain, cultivate adaptability and resilience (so you bounce back from challenges with greater dexterity) and drop you into a beautiful, kind, loving relationship with your own body. As humans we are wired to feel so many emotions. Some are pleasant and some are challenging. Emotions are energy moving inside the body. If you have ever felt fear (who hasn't?) you know that visceral feeling in the body as your heart rate increases, your throat tightens and you feel tension in your muscles. Emotions are not in our heads.

When we suppress emotions we are blocking and locking, pushing that energy down like holding an inflatable ball under water. At some point you have to let go, then the ball will power up at full force to the surface and beyond.

I like this analogy because it is so accessible.

I'm not suggesting unleashing your emotional energy on others, because if it's anger that often makes things worse for all concerned. At times though it may be appropriate. If you saw someone breaking into your car you'd probably feel anger and let them know about it ;)

Try this...

1. Find a quiet place at the time, or later when you have space.
2. Give yourself permission to feel that emotion as an energy moving inside your body.
3. Notice the sensations that arise.
4. Drop any story that may pop into your mind.
5. Let your body move as it wishes as you feel the emotion. If it's grief you may find your arms wrapping around your shoulders. Anger you may find your fists clenching.
6. Try to let the energy move, so you are not locked in that state.

Logic and reason are not helpful and will likely prevent you from accessing the emotional energy, keeping you stuck in a mind loop.

The Story so far...

Sarah has been teaching weekly yoga classes in Titirangi for 6 years. Classes integrate the fundamental elements of yoga - physical movement, breath awareness, meditation and deep relaxation. Many complete beginners attend these classes and enjoy the inclusive, friendly environment. Every class differs, centered around one weekly theme - selected intuitively by Sarah with a seasonal, energetic or postural basis. Breath awareness is emphasised throughout the classes, so you start to develop a natural connection to your breathing that you can take out into your daily life to alleviate stress and tension.
