"Sleep deprivation" is a phase that gets thrown around a lot when referring to mothers with new babies.

I don't particularly like the phrase...
Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it meeting the needs of your baby?

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it unreasonable expectations?

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it a normal experience of motherhood.

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it a time in your life that requires more surrender than ever before?

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it conflicting priorities?

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it lack of support.

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it birth trauma?

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it nutritional deficiency?

Is it "sleep deprivation"?
Or is it being unable to ask for help when we need it?

Is it "sleep deprivation"??!
What do you think it is?

💫Happy 2nd Birthday to my baby boy 💫

Born in the early hours of the morning, after less than 3 hours of labour.

"You're here now" were the first words you heard.

Your father's hands were the first to touch you, as he handed you to me.

Your grandmother heard your first cries from the other room.

Born in the safety and the warmth of your home.

No one else present, just me and your dad.

Words cannot fully explain the experience.

Pictures cannot fully capture the emotions.

The magical mystery of birth remains imprinted in your cells.

The memories etched in our souls.

Thank you for choosing us 💕

"Reframe your negative thoughts"

I bet you've heard advice that says "be sure to replace all your negative thoughts about birth, with positive thoughts".

now I'm not saying that it's completely wrong or worthless to only focus on positive thoughts about your upcoming birth!

what I am saying, is that it's not enough just to ignore the negative thought, by placing a 'band-aid' positive thought over the top of it.

by avoiding all negative thoughts, you miss out on being able to better understand what it is you are actually anxious about, or what you actually fear.

so often, the things that (we think...) we fear, are the things that we have been told to fear! vs knowing what we actually fear.

negative thoughts, fears, concerns, and anxieties are valuable ways that you can learn more about yourself,
and learn more about the birth that you want.

it's also an incredible learning opportunity.

for example if you have fears about pain, then yes maybe a good affirmation is "I can handle anything for 1 minute" but it might also be good to learn about how your body works, and how best to facilitate your physiology so that you can work with your body through these sensations.

the real birth prep, is knowing that certain things might happen AND that you can handle them, through using coping tools, or making the decisions that you want to make in that circumstance.

ignoring your fears and anxieties isn't that helpful afterall.

being realistic about the 'negative' things that could happen, allows you to consider making decisions that reduce the risk of those things happening. and if they do happen, you have a preferred plan on how to navigate the situation.

meeting your fears head on vs sweeping them off to the side, helps to avoid situations where you might be blindsided by something you didn't know about.

this is just scratching the surface of how to work through fears and anxieties about birth, but I hope it provides some food for thought!

What if?

What if you leaned into the experience?
Rather than trying to escape it?

What if you could accept the sensations of birth for what they are?

Rather than trying to escape from what you think it might be like?

What if you were present with it ALL?

Birth is a unique experience every time.
The invitation is to invite yourself fully into the experience.

The way you think about birth, and the expectations you have,
charges the way you prepare for birth.

Yes birth can be
Hard
Intense
Exhausting
Painful...

And it can also be
Exhilarating
Joyful
Beautiful
Empowering...

Embrace all that birth is,
Embrace the full experience.

Every single CHOICE that you make in pregnancy, will impact your birth experience.

Every choice you make will either take you CLOSER TO, or FURTHER FROM your ideal birth experience.

When making decisions, compare them back to whether they align with the type of birth that you want.

There are many things that influence your pregnancy and birth experience.

And sometimes, you just don't know what you don't know.

By asking yourself questions like
"What are my other options?"
you can start learning about the different options and possibilities available to you.

Often, it can seem that there is only one option, or one way to do things.
This may be influenced by:
the current birth culture,
your beliefs,
your expectations,
your previous experiences,
or what your care provider has recommended.

But I can assure you, that in 99% of cases, there is always another option.

Being aware of the other options can help you feel confident that you are making the decision that is best for you.

Some things you may want to consider, where a number of options/different ways of doing things exist:
Place of birth
The type of care provider you choose eg midwife vs OBGYN
Routine testing
Management of labour
Birth of your placenta
New born tests, measurements and screenings
Induction of labour

Are you aware of all your options?

Birth is like a narrow bridge.

A bridge that you may see in your mind, that is yours to walk, in all your power;
in all your vulnerability.
A physical bridge, that only you can pass over.

A bridge that seemingly SEPARATES you from what you are waiting for.
However, it's actually the thing that CONNECTS you to what is is you're waiting for!

There are parts of this narrow bridge that you have to walk alone.
With your support team behind you and in front of you.

There are times when no one can come with you or help you navigate the ups and downs of the bridge, however they can support you in the lead up to walking the bridge, and they can receive you as a new mother with your baby on the other side.

You leave your maiden self at one side, and emerge as a mother on the other side.

Are you nervous about having to walk the bridge of birth?
Are you excited to walk over this bridge?
How does this make you feel?
Are you ready to step into your power, to prepare to walk this bridge of birth?
