What a magical time we all shared at our final masterclass in Term 1 at Onehunga Community Centre on Saturday 18 April. We made 44 jars of Sassy Salsa with great people from diverse cultures who were eager to learn the art of preserving.
The Preserving the Past masterclasses delivered by Dee Petit and Gilly Stewart through Shiloh Creative Life Centre have demonstrated the continued importance and relevance of traditional home preserving skills within our community.
Teaching preserving is about passing on more than recipes. It is about restoring confidence, resilience, and connection — to our food, our communities, and our cultures. By learning these skills, people are not just saving money; they are reclaiming agency in how they feed themselves and those they love.
Preserving is a living art and craft. And when shared, it has the power to nourish both body and spirit, now and for generations to come. We created fun and relaxing spaces during this term where skills were shared, confidence was built, and 70 students were empowered to preserve food safely at home for their families.
A huge thank you to OCC, The Trust Community Foundation, Onehunga Adult Education, Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board and B***e Brothers for supporting this FREE programme.
We will be offering PTPM later in the year so follow/like us to stay in touch!
