GOUT FLARES BREAKING YOUR STRIDE?
Join our research if you are interested in becoming a part of a gout study – EURELIA 2 Study

❓ Do you have gout with high uric acid levels?
❓ Do you want to help us stride ahead in gout research?

The EURELIA 2 Study is designed to evaluate whether an investigational medication, taken daily by mouth for 12 months, can reduce uric acid levels and gout flare-ups in people aged between 18 and 85 years.

If you or a family/whānau member would like to learn more about the EURELIA 2 Study and what it means to take part, please contact the Rheumatology Clinic at Waikato Hospital by emailing rheumadministrator@waikatodhb.health.nz

If you do contact the study centre, it does not mean that you have to or will be able to take part; the study team will tell you more about the study when you speak to them.

Talofa lava 👋🏽

During Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week, we invited everyone to embrace their inner 'suga' and 'sole' for the week and get involved in learning and embracing Samoan culture.

This year’s theme was 'Mitamita i lau gagana, maua'a lou fa'asinomaga' which means to 'Be proud of your language and grounded in your identity' and encourages our Samoan aiga (family) to be proud of their ancestral language, spiritual language, Samoan language in the home, and Samoan written language.

Jenny Hewett, a Tokoroa midwife of Ngati Putekati – Aitutaki Cook Islands, created an awesome Samoa Language Week display at the local maternity facility.

The birthing unit was decorated with the 'ie Toga (fine mats), finely woven garments made from pandanus tree leaves which are highly prized items in the Samoan community.

Ia manuia le vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa – Happy Samoa Language Week!

COVID-19 is still active in the community and still making whānau and friends unwell.

Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand is asking you to play your part in keeping everyone safe.

Over the weekend we had an increase in the number of our patients in hospital testing positive for COVID-19 and it appears that in most cases they were exposed to the virus from people visiting.

😷❤️ If you are visiting loved ones in hospital, don’t forget to wear a mask and please don’t visit if you are feeling unwell or have flu, cold or COVID-19 symptoms.

❤️💜 Help us to protect our patients, visitors, and staff.

Now is a good time to get up-to-date with your vaccinations. Get your Flu and COVID-19 vaccination or booster at our pop-up vaccination clinics or GPs and pharmacies throughout the Waikato. To find a walk-in option today or book go to

We are relaxing our VISITOR GUIDELINES – from today (6 March 2023)

Our visiting guidelines at Te Whatu Ora in the Waikato have been relaxed due to the reduced number of COVID-19 cases in the community and COVID-19 patients receiving care at Waikato hospitals.

Visiting hours are 11am-1.30pm and 4pm-8pm daily.

There is still a heightened risk to vulnerable people in hospital and we ask you to respect our guides for safety and care of our patients and staff.

• Visitors are asked not to enter if they or anyone in their household are unwell, or isolating for COVID-19
• Wear a surgical mask at all times (includes children under the age of 12 where possible)
• Use hand sanitiser on entry and exit from our facilities
• Be considerate of other patients and staff caring for them at all times
• Children must be supervised at all times
• Drugs, alcohol, gang regalia, and smoking/vaping are not permitted

A key support person is someone who has been identified by the patient to have at their side during their stay. They are welcome from 8am-8pm or longer if agreed with the patient and the ward.

Increased safety protocols may remain in place for specific locations within our hospitals.

Get ahead of Measles - get your free MMR (Measles Mumps and Rubella) vaccine at many pharmacies. To find your local pharmacy that provides this service, visit www.healthpoint.co.nz and type ‘MMR vaccine’ into the search box to see a list of pharmacies. Many will allow walk-ins but it’s a good idea to call ahead to check.

You’ll need a total of 2 doses to be fully protected and they need to be at least a month apart.

Some pharmacies are unable to provide vaccinations to people under the age of 2 years, if this is the case in your area you will need to go to your medical centre for the free vaccine.

We know there’s already a lot to deal with right now, but we’ve identified a person with measles in New Zealand. Measles is highly contagious and can be very serious for people who aren’t protected against it.

The MMR (Measles Mumps and Rubella) vaccine provides great protection against measles. If you and your whānau aren't vaccinated or aren't sure - contact your GP to check if you need it. The vaccine is completely free for those born after 1 Jan 1969.

To find information and advice on what to do if you were present at a place visited by a measles case, visit: https://www.health.govt.nz/measlesexposure
