“Tū atu, haere!” were the words of Mananui Te Heuheu in response to Crown representatives who arrived at Ōhinemutu, Rotorua, seeking the support of rangatira to sign Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Those who attended the Waitangi Day commemorations last week may have encountered this exhibition, which presents the Ngāti Tūwharetoa perspective on Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Developed through a collaborative partnership between Taupō Museum, Tūwharetoa On (formerly Tūwharetoa FM), and Te Kapua Whakapipi, this exhibition is now proudly on display in the Niven Gallery at Taupō Museum.
This provides an opportunity for those who were unable to view the exhibition during Waitangi Day, or for visitors wishing to spend more time engaging with its content. The exhibition traces a historical timeline of key events from 1840 through to the post-1840 period, culminating in the signing of the Ngāti Tūwharetoa settlement in 2017 by the late Tā Tumu Te Heuheu.
With only nine days remaining, we invite our community and members of Ngāti Tūwharetoa to visit while it is on display. We also hope there will be future opportunities to share this important kaupapa more widely.
Tū Atu, Haere!
On now at Taupō Museum until 18 February 2026.
