Pihanga Health

Pihanga Health Pihanga Health provides high quality family health care to the local and surrounding Turangi area. Every effort will be made to accommodate your preferred time.

Appointments
Please ring 0800 PIHANGA or 07 384 7576 or email manager@pihanga.co.nz for an appointment. Emergencies will always be given priority and our reception staff will attempt to contact you if there is any unforeseen delay or your GP has been called away. Longer consultation times are available, so please ask our receptionist if you require some extra time. If you or a family member requires an interpreter service, we can organise this for you. Please let us know this when you make the appointment. If you arrive without an appointment, you may be asked to return at a more suitable time, unless you have an urgent problem. After Hours Care Arrangements
This practice provides after hours care via a triage system. If you think you need to see a Doctor after hours, phone the normal practice phone number and your call will be diverted to a triage service where you will be spoken to by a nurse who will assess your need to be seen by a Doctor. If she/he thinks you do need to be seen you will be directed to the Duty Doctor on call in Taupo. After 10pm, you will be asked to phone Taupo Hospital. Home Visits and Telephone Access
Home visits are available for regular patients whose condition prevents them from attending the surgery. GPs in the practice may be contacted during normal surgery hours. Your call will be put through to a Nurse who will assess your need for a home visit. She will discuss this with a Doctor. You will be contacted with an approximate time of the visit. Your call will always be put through to the GP or Nurse in an emergency. Test Results
The Doctor may request that you have some clinical investigations done either routinely or to assist in diagnosis. The results usually take up to 5 working days to come in. We do not routinely contact you with all your results, but we will always phone you your results are abnormal or if you need a follow-up appointment. If you have not heard from us, you can phone and request your results from one of the Nurses. Please phone after 2pm in the afternoon.

What is Measles?
Measles is a serious illness caused by a virus. It spreads very easily from person to person.

Measles has caused many deaths in tamariki (children) around the world, so it's important we all take action.

Early Symptoms include:
🔴 High fever
🔴 Cough
🔴 Runny nose
🔴 Loss of appetite
🔴 Sore, red eyes (conjunctivitis)
🔴 Small white spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)

If you or anyone in your house is experiencing any of these symptoms, please DO NOT come into the practice. Instead, phone us at 0800 744 2642 (0800 Pihanga) or
Healthline New Zealand on 0800 611 116. We can make arrangements to see you without putting others at risk.

✅ If you'd like to discuss how you or your tamariki can be better protected, please call us. We're here to help!

He mihi mahana – we understand that visiting a doctor or nurse isn’t always easy.
We know that for some, coming into the clinic can feel a bit whakamā (embarrassing or uncomfortable), and you may not want others to know why you're here.
Just so you know – we have a side entrance you can use if you’d prefer more privacy. When you call to book, just let us know, and we’ll arrange for you to come through the side door.
Alternatively, there’s a bell near the side door – ring it, and one of our kaimahi will come out to help.
Your wellbeing matters to us – in all the ways that count.

Big thanks to the awesome patients who dropped off this goodie bag! We don’t do what we do for the thanks — we do it because we care — but it really means a lot to be appreciated.

As many of you know, we proudly serve as a PRIME (Primary Response in Medical Emergencies) team, supporting Hato Hone St John. PRIME brings together specially trained rural GPs and nurses to assist the ambulance service in areas where response times might be long or where extra medical expertise is needed to help patients.

Because of this important work, your appointment may occasionally be delayed when we’re responding to a PRIME callout. We truly appreciate your understanding and patience during these times—thank you!

That’s what small communities are about: banding together to support one another when needed. That’s what makes Tūrangi and the surrounding communities so special.

He Kupu Aroha - A Tribute to Ariki Tā Tumu Te Heuheu Tūkino VIII

We, the staff of Pihanga Health, extend our heartfelt aroha and deep respect following the passing of esteemed Ngāti Tūwharetoa chief, Ariki Tā Tumu Te Heuheu Tūkino VIII.

We are profoundly grateful for Tā Tumu’s many years of leadership, service, and unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of whānau and communities. His presence carried great mana – a quiet strength, a deep compassion, and a genuine love for his people that we were privileged to witness first-hand.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lady Susan Te Heuheu and the wider whānau at this time of immense loss.

The voice of the tūī is still. The mighty tōtara has fallen. Return to your tupuna, return to the sacred embrace of home. Haere atu rā, e te rangatira.

“Kua hinga te tōtara o Te Waonui a Tāne.”

Who we are...

Pihanga Health was founded in 2007 with the aim of providing high quality and accessible primary healthcare to all in the community. Located in the Turangi Community Health Centre, Pihanga Health is one of many health entities in the centre supporting the concept of a one-stop shop for health in Turangi.

Pihanga Health is 50% owned by Midlands Health Network Pinnacle and 50% owned by Tuwharetoa Charitable Trust. Our governance is made up of a board of six directors with the majority residing in the local Turangi/ Taupō community.

Pihanga Health is a small organisation with twenty employees supporting 4,200 registered patients as well as any casual patients who may require assistance. The team is very supportive of each other and meet every morning to discuss the day ahead. We understand the stronger we are as a team the better healthcare we can provide. We also pride ourselves in our connection and accountability to the Turangi community and value the relationships we have with our patients.
