Pihanga Health

Pihanga Health Pihanga Health provides high quality family health care to the local and surrounding Turangi area. Every effort will be made to accommodate your preferred time.

Appointments
Please ring 0800 PIHANGA or 07 384 7576 or email manager@pihanga.co.nz for an appointment. Emergencies will always be given priority and our reception staff will attempt to contact you if there is any unforeseen delay or your GP has been called away. Longer consultation times are available, so please ask our receptionist if you require some extra time. If you or a family member requir

es an interpreter service, we can organise this for you. Please let us know this when you make the appointment. If you arrive without an appointment, you may be asked to return at a more suitable time, unless you have an urgent problem. After Hours Care Arrangements
This practice provides after hours care via a triage system. If you think you need to see a Doctor after hours, phone the normal practice phone number and your call will be diverted to a triage service where you will be spoken to by a nurse who will assess your need to be seen by a Doctor. If she/he thinks you do need to be seen you will be directed to the Duty Doctor on call in Taupo. After 10pm, you will be asked to phone Taupo Hospital. Home Visits and Telephone Access
Home visits are available for regular patients whose condition prevents them from attending the surgery. GPs in the practice may be contacted during normal surgery hours. Your call will be put through to a Nurse who will assess your need for a home visit. She will discuss this with a Doctor. You will be contacted with an approximate time of the visit. Your call will always be put through to the GP or Nurse in an emergency. Test Results
The Doctor may request that you have some clinical investigations done either routinely or to assist in diagnosis. The results usually take up to 5 working days to come in. We do not routinely contact you with all your results, but we will always phone you your results are abnormal or if you need a follow-up appointment. If you have not heard from us, you can phone and request your results from one of the Nurses. Please phone after 2pm in the afternoon.

🚨 Gastro Bug Going Around 🚨
There’s a vomiting and diarrhoea bug spreading locally — lasting around 3 days for most people. Please keep an eye on your tamariki and follow these tips 👇

💩 What is gastro?
It’s a bowel infection that causes runny poo, vomiting, fever, and tummy pain. It spreads fast, especially in homes, daycare, and schools.

👶 Watch little ones closely
Pēpi and young tamariki can get dehydrated quickly. Warning signs include:
Fewer wet nappies
Sunken eyes
Cold hands/feet
Sleepy or hard to wake

If your baby is under 6 months, see a doctor urgently if they have vomiting or diarrhoea.

💧 What to do at home
Give small sips of fluid often (even if vomiting)
Keep breastfeeding
You can dilute juice, lemonade or soup (1 part drink, 1 part water)

😷 Help stop the spread
Wash hands well
Clean shared spaces
Don’t share cups or food
Keep kids home until 48 hours after symptoms stop

📞 Call Healthline (0800 611 116) or see a doctor if you’re worried at any time.

Let’s look out for each other and keep our whānau safe ❤️

Have you heard about our Virtual GP Service?
Over the past few months, our on-site GPs have been supported by a video GP service — helping us maintain access to care when staffing is affected by illness or planned/unplanned leave.

Why are we offering this?
We know how important it is for you to see a GP when you need one. This service helps us keep appointment availability steady, even when our in-house team is stretched.

How does it work?

You book your appointment as usual through our admin team.

If a video consult is available, you’ll be offered that option.

On the day, you’ll come into the practice and be shown to a private room where you’ll speak with the GP via a secure video link.

Virtual GPs can provide the same level of care as our on-site doctors, and our nurses are available in the clinic to assist with things like blood pressure, observations, and more.

Patients who’ve tried it have been pleasantly surprised by how smooth and effective it is!

Ask our team if this option might suit you for your next visit.

Good morning
As we begin a new week, we wanted to let you know that some of our team are currently unwell, which may impact our capacity today.

If you call our triage line, please be aware that being triaged does not guarantee you'll be seen the same day.

For immediate medical advice, we encourage you to contact Healthline on 0800 611 116.

If you request a call from one of our triage clinicians, please understand there may be a delay in getting back to you.

We truly appreciate your patience and understanding, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Important Notice for Today
Due to staff illness, we’re currently experiencing reduced availability. We're doing our best to keep all appointments as scheduled, but some may need to be conducted via phone or video instead of in person.

If you’re unwell and visiting the practice, we kindly ask that you wear a mask to help protect our team and reduce the spread of flu and other bugs. Masks are available at the front desk if needed.😷

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Who we are...

Pihanga Health was founded in 2007 with the aim of providing high quality and accessible primary healthcare to all in the community. Located in the Turangi Community Health Centre, Pihanga Health is one of many health entities in the centre supporting the concept of a one-stop shop for health in Turangi.

Pihanga Health is 50% owned by Midlands Health Network Pinnacle and 50% owned by Tuwharetoa Charitable Trust. Our governance is made up of a board of six directors with the majority residing in the local Turangi/ Taupō community.

Pihanga Health is a small organisation with twenty employees supporting 4,200 registered patients as well as any casual patients who may require assistance. The team is very supportive of each other and meet every morning to discuss the day ahead. We understand the stronger we are as a team the better healthcare we can provide. We also pride ourselves in our connection and accountability to the Turangi community and value the relationships we have with our patients.

If you would like to know more about Pihanga Health, please check out our website at www.pihangahealth.co.nz.
