While trendy health foods can break the bank, they are not necessary for a healthy diet.

Some ways that you can eat healthy on a budget include:

- Buying in bulk: Grains, beans, and nuts are cheaper when purchased in larger quantities.

- Choosing produce in season: Not only does it contain more nutrients, but can be significantly cheaper.

- Buy frozen fruit & veg: Despite popular belief, frozen produce is just as nutritious, if not more nutritious than fresh produce and can often cost less.

- Cook at home: Making meals at home is much cheaper than eating out.

- Meal prep: Making your meals in bulk can cut down on costs.

- Grow your own herbs & veggies: Growing your own produce at home is also an effective way to cut down on costs.

It’s often about keeping it simple.

- Avoid taking within 2 hours of coffee, tea or calcium supplements

- Take on an empty stomach first thing in the morning or last thing at night

- Take every second day to minimise the effects of hepcidin

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats we need in our diet that play a crucial role in supporting overall health 💫

Here are some key benefits:

- Promotes healthy skin barrier - helpful in skin conditions such as eczema.

- Supports brain & nervous system function - for healthy mood balance.

- Anti-inflammatory - great for arthritis or other inflammatory conditions.

- Benefits heart health - keeps the bad fats in check and can help with high blood pressure.

The best food sources of omega 3:

Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, and trout, which provide long-chain omega 3’s EPA & DHA.

Or you can take a high quality fish oil daily if you’re concerned about not meeting your omega 3 needs in your diet.

If you’re plant-based, an algal-oil supplement is a great alternative 🌿

The botanical name for Chamomile, Matricaria recuitia, comes from the Latin word Mater which translates as Mother 💫

This little flower soothes and calms with her nervine, carminative and spasmolytic actions and is helpful for so many things from anxiety, digestive issues, cramps and sleep, just like a Mother’s soothing touch 💛

Did you know many medications can deplete essential nutrients from your body?

If you’re on any medications, it’s important to increase your dietary intake of specific nutrients and watch for signs of deficiencies like fatigue, brittle hair and nails, poor immunity or muscle cramps.

In some cases it’s recommended that you take a supplement alongside medications such as coQ10 with statins and B vitamins with the contraceptive pill. This is especially important if you’re taking them long-term.

For more targeted support or to find out more have a chat to your practitioner 💛

Adaptogens are a unique class of herbs that help to support stress resilience.

They help to reduce the physiological effects of stress on the body and restore balance during times of increased stress.

Each adaptogenic herb has its own unique properties making them unique and beneficial for different situations and different people.

My favourite at the moment is Rehmannia, do you have a favourite adaptogen herb?

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple way of breaking down the components of a healthy plate:

-Begin by filling half your plate with colourful vegetables like leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, capsicum or zucchini.

- Next add a portion of quality protein approximately the size of the palm of your hand. Sources include: eggs, tofu, tempeh, chicken, fatty fish, organic meats, greek yoghurt, cottage cheese

- Next add about a cup of complex carbs such as brown rice, quinoa, oats, buckwheat or sweet potato

- Then add 2 tablespoons of healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil or avocado.

And lastly, remember it’s important to always enjoy your food 💛

While it’s important to have strong foundations in place when it comes to your immune health, including a healthy diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, there are times when certain herbs and supplements can provide targeted support.

We can use herbs as a helping hand from Nature to facilitate and support our body’s own immune response.

My top immune herbs:

🌿 Echinacea
🌿 Astragalus
🌿 Withania
🌿 Reishi
🌿 Elderberry
🌿 Raw Garlic

Each of these herbs work in a slightly different way to either activate or nourish your immune system depending on if your immune system is stressed or run down.

Alongside the help from nature with herbs there are also certain nutrients that are required in optimal amounts for proper immune function in our body such as:

🌱 Vitamin C
🌱 Vitamin D
🌱 Zinc
🌱 Selenium

The type, quality, combination and dose of these herbs and nutrients are different for each person so it’s always best to chat to your Naturopath so they can help you find the best herbs and nutrients for you.
