This is the official page of the Department of Health Practice. Current students please refer to Moodle for all study related information and queries. We challenge students to go beyond traditional care or case management to focus on creating a supportive environment for health and wellbeing. Our students learn how to promote healthy living and to care for the individual. They also learn how to become independent and confident decision-makers, with a focus on motivation, tolerance and acceptance of different cultures and beliefs. You will be taught by a dedicated team of qualified and experienced professionals, working with people and make a difference in their lives.

Two Nursing scholarships available:
• Māori & Pasifika Nursing Scholarship *
• Ryman Nursing Scholarship

Value: Each scholarship is a one-off payment of $6,000

To apply all you need is:
• A strong passion for Aged Care
• To be in your 3rd and final year of a Bachelor of Nursing Degree
• *Be of Māori or Pasifika heritage

Te Papa Hauora are teaming up with University of Canterbury for another great FREE opportunity for ALL Ara students – with a cash prize to finish 😊

We’re excited to invite you to participate in the upcoming Future of Health Disrupt Challenge, delivered by UCE in partnership with Te Papa Hauora.


When: Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd August 2025, 9am-5pm
Where: Manawa Building, Christchurch Health Precinct
Challenge Briefing Launch: Tuesday, 29th July 2025, 5pm-7pm at UCE

This 48-hour Challenge is your chance to help create ‘A Sustainable Health System’ and tackle important health sector issues like:
• Prevention - How can we more effectively prevent, detect and treat health issues?
• Promotion - How can we better support healthy communities?
• Environment - How can we shape our health system to responsibly utilise resources?

You’ll work in diverse teams, receive mentoring from industry experts, enjoy great food, and pitch innovative solutions to real-world health challenges.
Who can participate?

The Challenge is open to all tertiary students in Canterbury.
Team information:
You can register solo or as a group - we’ll help match individuals to form teams.
