Join us at Wish Fulfilling Land this Thursday the 14th for sutra reading and a shared vegetarian lunch 💫

This is a great opportunity to connect, and share this meaningful project with others and share in a picnic lunch.

Please come to Chandrakirti Centre at 9.30am, or meet us at 262 Central Road South at 10am if you would like to join in this Thursday the 14th.

Read below to learn more about the Wish Fulfilling Land project ⬇️

In 2017, a 64 hectare block of regenerating bush was purchased at 262 Central Road South, Upper Moutere, by the Chandrakirti Trust, thanks to the support of many donors, with the intention to provide a meditation retreat sanctuary with small dwellings suitable for short and long-term meditation retreats.

We recently received the resource consent from Tasman District Council to go ahead with building 12 meditation dwellings on the property.

Ecotech Design is in the final stages of drafting the building plans for these ecofriendly sustainable dwellings, and we are looking for interested people who would like to be involved with the project.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche, shared, “We need to have more retreat places to study the path.” FPMT should have many around the world, so it is easy for people and they don’t have to travel very far, make them as perfect as possible for meditation. It is a very, very, very important project because the extensive study of philosophy is something that is already being done in the FPMT, however, meditating and actualising the lam-rim in retreat, that is something else. We really need the lam-rim realisations in the heart."

Co-Director Phillipa Rutherford continues to lead this project, ensuring the ongoing development of the property and facilities.

Chandrakirti Meditation Centre will be sharing more about this project in our newsletter, including updates and fundraising invitations.

At the end of last month, our co-directors, Phillipa and Britta, attended the FPMT - Australia and New Zealand - meeting at Atisha Centre in Bendigo, Australia. Over three days, directors, staff, and trustees from FPMT centres and projects came together to connect, collaborate, and share their experiences.

Reflecting on the gathering, Britta shared: “It was such a meaningful and enriching time connecting with our Australian colleagues — learning from each others experiences; sharing both the highlights and challenges from our centres; and especially connecting in person really strengthens that sense of family that Lama Yeshe so often spoke about.
Visiting the Great Stupa was truly inspiring, especially seeing the recently completed Kalachakra ceiling (pictured)—what an incredible achievement! We also very much enjoyed a tour of the newly completed nunnery including their new gompa.”

Chandrakirti Meditation Centre is affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) organisation, founded in 1975 by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche (pictured).

The FPMT network includes city centers, residential centers and retreat centers, monasteries, nunneries, publishing services, hospices, and other services and projects functions worldwide; including Chandrakirti Meditation Centre here in Tasman, New Zealand!

In Sunday's meditation class, Geshe-la continued teaching on the Five Aggregates, helping us to understand how both suffering and wellbeing rely on the Five Aggregates. He also introduced the Mindfulness of Body, one of the Four Close Placements of Mindfulness, as a way to deepen our understanding of what we call the “I.”

Geshe-la pointed out that for many, even though access to outer resources such as food and medicine has greatly improved, our mental suffering has increased.
He encouraged us to contemplate why this is the case and how it is connected to misunderstanding what the “I” really is.

Geshe-la highlighted the difference between genuine compassion and attachment, and how to develop pure compassion through equanimity practice and understanding the Five Aggregates.

Geshe-la also reflected on how modern science is beginning to support the Buddhist view that human nature is fundamentally rooted in love rather than violence.

Geshe-la set homework, encouraging us to investigate where the “I” can be found and to bring our reflections to the following Sunday’s class, where he will go further into this topic.

This session concluded with a meditation practice which includes 5 stages, while focusing on the 5 aggregates during analytical meditation;
- motivation meditation
- Breathing exercise
- Breathing meditation
- Mindfulness of present moment
- Analytical meditation
