Bratwurst Bros. will remain open, with full access over this time.

Latest update from Downer's

ROAD CLOSURE - Mangapepeke Culvert Replacement Projects - SH3 Ahititi: 16-20 January
Downer, on behalf of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi’s Culvert Replacement Projects will be replacing two ageing culverts on SH3 at the northern side of Mt Messenger this summer. The sites are shown in the attached map.
Enabling works started in November 2025, and the main earthworks and culvert replacement work will start in January 2026.

Due to deep excavation works required, a full road closure of SH3 is planned for 16-20 January.
Here is what you need to know:
SH3 between the Uruti Community Hall and Okau Road at Ahititi will be CLOSED from 12.01am Friday 16 January until 11.59pm Tuesday 20 January.

The combination of deep open trenches, heavy machinery and space requirements means it is not safe or practical for road users to access the site during the 5-day closure while this work is underway.
We expect temporary traffic management to be in place at Urenui and Piopio to help direct road users during the closure.
Access for residents, workers and customers will be maintained by crews on site; however, no vehicles will be able to pass through the culvert worksites during the 5-day closure.

The backup dates for this work are Friday 23 January to Tuesday 27 January 2026.

For more information contact the project team at SH3TaranakiCulverts@nzta.govt.nz or visit their website here.
In addition to the abovementioned closure, our maintenance teams will rebuild several sections of the state highway, and complete various resurfacing and maintenance activities during this period while traffic volumes are lowest, to condense disruption to road users and the community during this busy period.
Our maintenance teams will rebuild several sections of SH3 between Mimi and Piopio, with each site taking approximately 6-8 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Crews will also complete other maintenance activities throughout January such as resurfacing, patch repairs, signage repairs, drainage works, bridge maintenance, and pothole repairs during this time.
All rebuild and maintenance sites will be completed under stop/go traffic controls to maintain access for road users, with delays of approximately 5-10 minutes at each site.

We are currently confirming the details for these rebuilds. We will provide an update on the NZTA website (nzta.govt.nz/taranaki-maintenance), including the exact locations of the rebuilds, once confirmed.

Let’s be honest - things don’t always go to plan. 📉 And that is completely normal.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is something many guys deal with, but few talk about. If you’re stuck, here are your options in NZ:

💊 Pharmacist consults: You can often access medication (like sildenafil) directly from a pharmacist after a quick health check.
👨‍⚕️ GP visit: Highly recommended to rule out underlying stuff like blood pressure or diabetes.
🧠 Mental health: sometimes it's stress or anxiety, not physical. Talk to your usual health provider about support for mental health concerns, or visit: info.health.nz/mental-health/where-to-get-help

Don’t sit on it. It’s just health. Link for more resources.🔗 healthify.nz/health-a-z/e/erectile-dysfunction

The Minister for Mental Health has extended the timeframes for developing the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy to align with changes to the law.

The extra time means we can engage more meaningfully and ensure more people and communities are heard. We want the Strategy to reflect the voices and needs of all New Zealanders.

Public consultation will now take place in early 2026. There will be lots of ways for you to share your views.

If you’d like to help your community take part, please contact us at: mhasp.engagement@health.govt.nz.

We’ll keep you updated.

Know the signs: When is it alcohol poisoning?

We often hear about "sleeping it off," but when someone has had too much to drink, sleeping can be dangerous. Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency.

It’s not always easy to tell the difference between being drunk and having alcohol poisoning, but there are key signs to watch for.

Look out for:
✅ Confusion: They are very groggy or unable to be roused.
✅ Vomiting: Especially while unconscious.
✅ Seizures: Shaking or fitting.
✅ Breathing: Slow (less than 8 breaths a minute) or irregular breathing.
✅ Cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: You do not need to see all of these signs for it to be life-threatening. A person who is passed out and cannot be woken up is at risk.

What to do:
📞 Call 111 immediately. Do not wait.
👬🏽 Stay with them. Never leave them alone to "sleep it off."
↪️ Turn them on their side. This is the recovery position and helps prevent choking if they vomit.
♨️ Keep them warm. Alcohol lowers body temperature.

What NOT to do:
❌ Do not give them coffee.
❌ Do not put them in a cold shower.
❌ Do not try to walk them around.

Look after your mates and whānau. If in doubt, make the call.
