Really helpful for anyone dealing with stress or pain be it physical, mental or emotional. Do this as often as possible and over time it will become habitual, helping us deal with the inevitable challenges that come our way.

Back in Level 2! Waiting for clarification from the Physiotherapy Board about what delta level 2 looks like for us (likely masks, covid clearance questions, and QR scanning) but I’m taking bookings at the Wadestown Medical Practice with a view to being there from Wednesday 8th September.

As of today I am unable to deliver face-to-face physiotherapy due to Covid-19. I am still available for logging ACC claims, physiotherapy assessment and advice via phone or cyberspace. Contact me via text or call 021 02375958 if you need assistance. Otherwise see you on the other side of all this. Just remember during this time...if you don't move it you lose it!

Not what any of us want to hear if we've overindulged at Christmas but the statistics are worth taking on board. If you're struggling to find a New Years Resolution then maybe your knees would be grateful for this one.... This robust 2017 research has made it very clear for any of us sitting on the fence.

Conclusion 'Participants who lost weight over 48 months showed significantly lower cartilage degeneration, as assessed with MR imaging; rates of progression were lower with greater weight loss.' - Aug 2017

Headaches are often referred from the neck so if you've had your headaches checked medically for other causes and come up empty, maybe your neck and neck muscles are the culprit. At the bottom of this post there are two great exercises to address this issue. Whether your headaches are from whiplash, concussion, or poor or prolonged sitting they will open up your joints and stretch your postural neck muscles in a safe way.

The relentless pounding…the intense throbbing…headaches are the worst! Unfortunately, they’re also very common. In fact, they’re the most common reason people use over-the-counter pain medication. …

Visual representations of important things to remember work for me. If we are in a situation requiring us to step in and perform CPR having previously seen a visual may help...you never know when you may need it.

I'm a huge believer in supporting Western medicine with natural options and I love the fact that one of my favourite essential oils shows favourable results in dealing with some of our greatest physical challenges. Diffusing lemongrass alone or with lavender in an ultrasonic diffuser makes everyone feel amazing - clean, fresh and calm. In addition to applying it directly on the skin with a carrier oil you can ingest therapeutic grade lemongrass via vege capsules to get internal and external benefits. This is one powerful plant medicine.

Could lemongrass essential oil be as effective as toxic chemo in stopping the spread of cervical and other cancers? Learn what researchers have uncovered.

With an increasing elderly population it's vital that we help to keep our elderly friends and family in their own homes for as long as they're safe to do so. Poor balance, strength and lack of confidence are major risk factors for falls which can severely impact mental and physical health. Supporting them to seek help to address these issues is important for us post baby boomers, Gen X, Y and Millenials as there is so much we can do to improve the quality of life of our elderly in NZ.

As you get older you have a greater risk of falling. Physiotherapy can help by providing exercises that will improve your strength and balance, reducing your chance of having a fall and enabling you to keep active.

This is a really interesting article that speaks to overtraining. The will may be strong but the body needs to be respected. I see this a lot in clinical practice. Patients come in passionate about the volume of exercise they are doing but when I assess the qualities of the pulse, as part of my eastern medicine assessment, it tells a very different story. If you're spending too much energy on your workouts, whether they be cardio or weights, you may notice that you feel physically drained, not physically energised, by the exercise. You may also find you're not losing the weight you expected if this is one of your goals. Your body may be experiencing this as stressful rather than beneficial and keeping you in a sympathetic or fight/flight state, not the parasympathetic or rest and digest state. I have seen this result in autoimmune disorders and am not surprised that this article relates overtraining similarities with clinical depression. Dr Libby has spoken extensively about this and encourages breathing practices like restorative yoga, qigong, taichi or even pilates to complement or replace your exercise routine if it isn't working for you. Your body knows best so check in with it - or talk to a practitioner who can help.

Why putting in hours at the gym may need to be countered by more time on the couch.

I see many people with osteo and rheumatoid arthritis in my line of work. The medications are pretty heavy duty and often prolonged due to the nature of arthritis. I'm intrigued by the possibilities of other ways of looking at these very common diseases. I regularly see X-rays of patients showing significant arthritic changes that have no symptoms. This article is written by a Medical Specialist who has championed women's health and provides an alternative look at arthritis. If you know anyone with arthritis it would be worth a read......

As an ageless goddess I am here to tell you that you don’t have to put up with arthritis and the pain and disability it can bring.

Plantar fasciitis can be difficult to treat, and can take a long time to recover from. Maybe give this protocol a try (if you've had an accurate diagnosis) and note the section that says don't run unless you can walk 10km..........Just as an aside I have noticed a common thread with this injury occurring in people who are undergoing a period of transition. Maybe addressing the emotional issues around this, and identifying the predominant feeling, could facilitate a more rapid recovery?

Plantar fasciitis can be a nuisance to treat and, to date, we’ve had little high quality evidence to guide us. Today’s blog represents an exciting new direction in treating this stubbor…
