The collective have been connecting for the last 8 years but bec

ame a legal entity in the last few years. The processes have been shared within indigenous companies, teams, dance companies, institutes, schools, colleges, charities, trust funds and youth prisons. The collective are most commonly identified with working within the justice system as a support union for individuals to lean on. The collective have a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds and therefore have no ONE identifiable culture other than the culture of learning how to amalgamate togetherness. Participants experience a whole - listic approach to physical arrangements of sequences, elemental vocal work, mau rakau contexts, Connection (martial arts) that have an authentic tone in the practices. These sequences are then encouraged to be translated to each individuals own contexts with the support of collective or group learning and trust.

ĀMA trainings. To teach lead and guide you must be loyal in energy, relationship or code of life, if your teachers are reckless behind the scenes it will flow into your Mārae - you’ll practice these addictions without knowing. Be weary of who you learn from, you’ll become the practice that’s oozing out. Thankful to our Master Edward Karauria, Sensei Gabriel Terekia, Sensei Te Wehi Kore Karena and Shihan Dwayne Davies for the teachings to uphold the standard of the way of life. These are our examples

DŌ - A way or path, JO - your environment, KUN - What is required of you to attain the learning. Dōjo originates from the place where Buddhism was studied. The hall which prayer meditation and service to Buddha occurred for monks. A place of karakia and study. It is not bound by culture but anchored as an elemental life force. The original teachings are the acknowledgements of the old gods and is recited within the Dojo Kun which were then translated into English differently. The original states “The Buddhist teachings and old gods”. Kyoku meaning THE ULTIMATE, Shin meaning TRUTH. How you walk you stand you speak you pay homage. It means a lifelong pursuit of finding one’s true potential by forging the body the mind and spirit in flow, intensity, focus and humility. This is what it is FIRST. How it is formed can look different. It may look different body to body but regardless blood flow is swift and listening. These are the Buddhist teachings we must acknowledge as this is the origin, the whakapapa. The ultimate truth of the old gods as stated in the Dōjo Kun. Taught from our Master Sensei Gabriel Terekia from Waihirere down to Sensei Te Wehi Kore Karena and lived through Te Whānau Āio. It is a quality of life. Discipline, Projection of voice and energy, form, honesty, patience, healing, humility, respect, calm innerstanding. These are the teachings beginning from Buddhism that kyokushin come from, that spread through South East Asia, that aligned to a lifestyle already lived in Waihirere and taught to Master Gabriel, that is the foundation for our path and walk as Te Whānau Āio, it is the left side of Āio. This is no different to all our work in Te Whānau Āio. Your kata equates to your foundation for how you meet challenges. It is a bridge of living as the example of one’s potential. If the focus is merely fighting then the fight continues on in the unmet mind lingering. If the focus is only points, then the focus has lost kyokushin - The Ultimate Truth. The true kyokushin is one where the ultimate truth reveals the characters connection to the spring of the old ways.

We practice multiple forms of discipline to activate the essences of what each practice provides(Kyokushin, Tae Kwon Do, stunts, Oceanic movement, Mau Rākau) and embody the principles in our day to day lives.

In 3 days, some of our Pou Tawhito will compete at the Northern zone Kyokushin Tournament held in Papakura.

It’s been a humbling experience to embody the practice of Kyokushin in the past 6 months to a year.

The conditioning is demanding and uncomfortable. The kihon (basics) must be sharp, precise, and builds an internal awareness on where the power of your Māuri comes from. The kata puts a practitioner in a state of “moving meditation” The kumite requires courage, timing, and composure. Every part of training asks something from you. It asks for effort. It asks for focus. It asks for honesty. You cannot fake progress on the mat. You either put in the work or you do not.

The real work for us is not the tournament it self, or training/ rehearsing for a big performance, or only training because we get our selves “ready” for a big day… instead, it’s about a constant practice to discover or re-discover who we are every single day.

Grateful to be with these ones on this journey of connection. Never assume you know a person there’s always more ways to learn more about each other. The moment you stay stagnant in connection you loose it. Grateful Grateful that the health of these ones are the ones that guide guests to realize that we as indigenous are multifaceted in skill in love in passion. Like our whenua holds up many forms of life we as uri as descendants echo her as our first teacher, unlimited in our capacity. Just like her. 🌍

Our Masters, Shihan, Sempai, Senseis and Pouako all looking down on you seeing their teachings honoured, respected, cared for and appreciated. A Mighty responsibility is on your shoulders now. You have begun to embody these legends. They will watch over all that you do now. That is the puna of black, the void, the deep potential of abundance from which you draw from in diverse mastery, kokowai the crimson ochre blood of the beginning, Pukepoto the veins of the river flow and Taioma the status of the ritual rites you hold through the portals of our ancient past. 📷

OSU 🥋HO 👊🏾 So proud of each of these amazing people. Each have committed 💯 into their own journey into the Martial Arts practice of Āio and living the art of the ultimate truth… Kyokushin. Deep gratitude to the founder of this art… Mas Oyama and the legacy he has left for many of us and the generations to learn, embody and apply rooted values in our lives.
I was fortunate to be taught from his students and therefore all Āio members, this is the whakapapa you now wield and are responsible to uphold. Kancho Matsushima and Hanchi, John Taylor. karate Goju Ryu Master Higaona. More legends I trained with under this whakapapa tree was shihan Soloman Purcel, his sons shihan james and John Purcell and then my father Sempai John Koria and my mister Miagi… sensei and uncle Gabriel Terekia .
The next line of whakapapa under the umbrella of karate you will begin to wield Tae Kwon do. I want to also acknowledge Grand Master Edward Karauria who will also be apart of the lineage you will wield and interlinks the Pouako of Te Awe Ki Tūranga, Logan Pokai, Rapiata Ria and Moetahi Kennedy. These are your embodied masters, Pouako, Shihan that you have now embodied. You have learned EMBODIED BLOODLINES through studying training and learning the forms.
All these people and many more, have contributed to where we are today, walking this path of Āio Martial Arts. An honour to walk this path… domo arigato gozaimasu! This is now YOUR whakapapa as students of all these Masters. Osu! Ho!

Our fanau were in today from Pacific Advanced Secondary School. Always love having my cousins nephews and niece in. Teaching connection by utilising Rākau as a vehicle to navigate being within. “KOIKOI - sharpening the tools within us, so that when we encounter life experiences, the practice of working within will reflect how we respond to the lessons on the outside” - looking forward to seeing the footage from this of our vast connections as Oceanic people. Always love seeing my mentors, my cousins Parehuia and Fatu who have been my example for my relationship’s within my marriage, my choices and our choice of service since I was young. My nephews Brian and Ula, so proud to see the choices of how you model such a fine example for our rangatahi, our men and family role models. I’m so proud of you both. Find those people who are your example of how you want to lead others in your future.
