Measles Update
We’ve been made aware that there are several measles cases in the Wellington region.

The first symptoms of measles can look very similar to a cold, COVID-19, or the flu, which means it can be hard to recognise at first.

Early symptoms include:
• Fever (temperature of at least 38°C)
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Sore, red eyes

A rash usually appears 3–5 days after these early symptoms start.

• The rash looks like pink or red spots or bumps.
• It starts on the face and then spreads down the body.
• It may be harder to see on darker skin.
• The rash is not usually itchy and may last a week or more.

Measles can spread very easily and can cause serious illness. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your whānau. For more information https://waikanaehealth.co.nz/news/

Today, Thursday (Rāpere), is day four of Mental Health Awareness Week, and the Top Up Together theme is take notice / me aro tonu.

Take notice refers to the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness can be thought of as open and receptive attention to, and awareness of, what is occurring in the present moment. Practising mindfulness with others can deepen connection and enhance our collective sense of wellbeing.

As Matariki rises in our skies, we take this time to reflect, remember, and reconnect. Matariki is a time to honour those who have passed, celebrate the present with whānau and community, and look forward to the year ahead with hope and intention.

At Waikanae Health we wish all our patients and their whānau a peaceful and meaningful Matariki. May this season bring you rest, renewal, and time to nurture your wellbeing. Photo credit Karl Webber
