🌞 Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer affecting New Zealanders? The good news is, it’s largely preventable—and when detected early, it’s often treatable.

🔎 Early Detection is Key:

Check your skin every 3 months, including hard-to-see areas like your back, scalp, and behind your ears. Use a mirror or ask someone to help.

Look for freckles, moles, or spots that are:
- New or changing
- Not healing
- Different from others around them
- Changing in size, thickness, shape, or colour
- Bleeding

🩺 If you notice anything unusual, visit your GP. Regular skin checks are especially important if you:
- Are at higher risk
- Have a family history of skin cancer
- Have had severe sunburns in childhood

Skin checks are a standard service offered by all our medical centres. If you or a family member are experiencing skin conditions that worry you, please book...

☀️ Choosing the Right Sunscreen ☀️

Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is a must! Here’s how to pick the perfect sunscreen for your needs this summer:

👀 Look for:
- Broad-spectrum protection (against UVA & UVB)
- A Water-resistant formula
- At least SPF 30

Fair skin? Opt for SPF 50+ for extra protection.
Sensitive skin? Choose hypoallergenic options with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.
Dry skin? Use moisturising sunscreen creams.
Oily or acne-prone skin? Try lightweight lotions, sprays, or gels.

💡 Remember:
- No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays—reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
- Store your sunscreen in a cool place.
- Check the expiration date!

A Whooping Cough epidemic has been declared across New Zealand. It's important to be aware of the risks, particularly for babies, children, and older adults.

Around 50% of pēpi who catch whooping cough before the age of 12 months need hospitalisation and 1 or 2 in 100 of those hospitalised pēpi die from the infection. More information on this can be found at Te Whatu Ora: https://buff.ly/4fKiBec

The best protection against Whooping Cough is immunisation, though immunity can reduce over time, meaning regular top-ups may be necessary.

If you're pregnant or planning to spend time with babies (0-5 months) or older adults over the holiday period, now is a good time to check if you're up to date with your vaccinations.

We offer whooping cough vaccinations, and some groups may be eligible for funding.
