The Paul Hunter Centre Inc

The Paul Hunter Centre is a community service based in Central Hawkes Bay. We offer Participation and Inclusion Services for Adults with Disabilities.

The Paul Hunter Centre has been providing services to support people with disabilities residing in Central Hawke's Bay since 1994. We support people with all types of disabilities - intellectual, physical and mental health. The main objective of the Paul Hunter Centre is to enable our clients to have a "Good Life". The Paul Hunter Centre Inc offers participation and inclusion services for adults with disabilities residing in Central Hawkes Bay. We support our clients to develop life skills that will enable them to truly participate in the community, and to have enjoyable and more fulfilled lives. You can become a client if you are living in New Zealand and a citizen or a permanent resident aged between 16 and 64 and have a disability that is ongoing for more than 6 months that limits your participation in the community.

Hi everyone, last week we farewelled someone very special - Martina, our wonderful art teacher and client facilitator. Martina had been with us for many years and in that time, she brought colour, kindness and laughter into our lives. She encouraged us to to be creative, and always made us smile and laugh with her lovely laugh. We'll miss her warmth, and the way she made every art session feel like a little adventure. Thank you Martina, for everything you've shared with us, you've made a lasting mark on our Centre, with best wishes and gratitude from everyone at PHC.

The clients spent a lovely morning making wooden peg decorations. It took lots of coordination to get them glued in the correct place. The end result is fantastic.

2025 Annual General Meeting Summary – The Paul Hunter Centre

Our recent AGM reflected both gratitude for longstanding contributions and excitement for the future.

• Farewell to Jude: After years of dedicated service, our Chairperson, Jude Henry, officially stepped down. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping our service, and Jude has not only been our Chairperson, but also a mentor and a true friend to us all. She has helped shaped a community service where people feel seen, heard and valued . We extend heartfelt thanks for Jude's wisdom and unwavering commitment, she will always be part of our PHC family.

• Celebrating Elsie’s Retirement: We also acknowledged the retirement of Elsie Fong, a cherished staff member whose kindness, and sewing skills, have touched many lives. For nearly three decades, Elsie has supported the clients, and we are so grateful while she is stepping back from her staff role, she has joined our wonderful volunteer team.

• Welcoming Dean Hyde as Chairperson: We’re excited to welcome Dean as our new Chairperson. Dean brings a wealth of experience, and a deep commitment to everything that matters to our community. We look forward to his guidance as we continue to strengthen our impact and community partnerships.

• Acknowledging Our Staff and Volunteers: We also took time to thank our incredible staff and volunteers, whose daily efforts uphold the Centre’s values and bring our mission to life. Their dedication, warmth, and teamwork are the heartbeat of our community.

Thank you to all who attended and contributed to this meaningful occasion.

Today we helped the clients finish their Christmas scene to be made into a wall hanging. So proud of their efforts especially one client who stitched her own creation.

We have spent a wonderful morning with CanBeads Hawke’s Bay.

The clients have made some beautiful Christmas Decorations with Meg and Angela. We are all proud of the creativity of our clients.

Nearly twelve months ago, we teamed up with Ben Evans to begin an Inclusive Taekwondo class for our clients. Yesterday some of them took part in a challenge day and wow, we are so proud! Following is a summary report provided by Ben:

Paul Hunter Centre Shines at the 2nd NZ Inclusive Taekwon-Do Challenge 2025

The Paul Hunter Centre in Waipukurau made a powerful mark at the 2nd NZ Inclusive Taekwon-Do Challenge 2025, held at Hastings Christian School. Seven determined athletes from the Centre took part, showing courage, perseverance, and the true spirit of Inclusive Taekwon-Do.

Mike – 🥇 Gold in Patterns, 🥉 Bronze in Team Patterns

Warwick – 🥈 Silver in Patterns

Kelly – 🥈 Silver in Patterns, 🥉 Bronze in Team Patterns

William – 🥉 Bronze in Team Patterns

Delysse – 🥇 Gold in Patterns

Every competitor put in their best effort, and together they brought pride not only to the Paul Hunter Centre, but also to the wider Waipukurau community.

Special Recognition

In a heartfelt moment, Ben Evans awarded the Paul Hunter Centre special acknowledgement for their team’s efforts. He asked Kelly to step forward and accept on behalf of the group, recognising her strong spirit and resilience in facing challenges on the day. Kelly’s determination represented the courage of the whole team.

A Day to Remember

The event was filled with inspiration, encouragement, and community spirit. With over 100 athletes competing, the Paul Hunter Centre stood tall, demonstrating what Inclusive Taekwon-Do is all about—breaking barriers, celebrating ability, and growing in confidence through martial arts.

Congratulations once again to the Paul Hunter Centre athletes—your success will inspire many more in the years ahead!

A massive shout out to the Hawkes Bay Bagpiper for coming to the Paul Hunter Centre and sharing his talent with our clients. They were all amazed and danced in time to the music. A shout out to our special guests on Bedford Terrace for joining in as well.

Yesterday for our literacy programme, we used story dice. You roll the dice and the items you get have to be in your story. The ideas in the story the clients came up with are amazing. I am so proud of them.
