It isn’t often that my two businesses have an adventure together. I took to the .tekapo weekend. Cold water swimming, fermenting, foraging, sourdough, stargazing, a lovely walk and connecting with delightful people and my weekend here is done. I’ll be back next year, for sure.

I’ve been working on my cold water tolerance this year.

Lots of swims in the lake and dipping in the ice bath.

I just bought a big freezer, so I can get things a bit colder.

This was a challenge. Stayed in for 15 minutes. It does focus the mind!

There are so many benefits to cold water exposure. Recovery, resilience, improved mood, improved cognitive function, reduced inflammation and muscle soreness, brown fat activation and more.

I’m not sure that I’ll be a year round lake swimmer, but this a fun experiment.

I miss my gym and my gym buddies (shout out to Our Place Community Fitness).

Until I have a garage space I can use, this setup does quite nicely.

There’s been lots of walking too. It would be rude not to - it’s so pretty and right outside my door.

There’s nothing quite like a cool lake swim with a furry friend (she’s called Olive, and she isn’t mine) to wash away a stressful day.

Not sure if I’ll still be swimming in winter, but who knows!

New year, new me? I don’t think so - not really my thing.

This new year brings with it lots of new things for me, though. Just by chance.

New home, new community, new studies, new views, new adventures.

Last year, we decided to leave the city and move to the mountains, in a bid for ‘more mountains, fewer spreadsheets, less debt’, for our health and wellbeing.

Selling up and moving was no easy task, but we did it, and we moved into our new home a month ago. The kitties arrived 3 weeks ago, just in time for Christmas.

We’ve been welcomed into our new community very warmly, which is just lovely. I’m excited to get to know the people I’ve met better, and meet more new ones.

I’m excited to have fewer distractions this year, so that I can focus more on my clients, teaching, learning and having adventures.

I’m very excited to explore my new, very big back yard!

This is my new office. It isn’t quite sorted yet, but I am down to the last 2 boxes in here.

And another photo of a new favourite walk just up the road.

My friend has written this great book for kids (and big kids!) about easing our minds when all hell breaks loose (I’m talking about you, Cyclone Gabrielle!).

Hello, given last night was pretty rough on most of us on the North Island of New Zealand, I've spent today writing a little book to help children to manage their feelings when things feel tough.

It's full of the how and why things work to manage how you feel.

If you would like a copy you can download it here:

Let me know what you think and because I'm working off of intermittent wifi and no power any spelling errors are my own!

We’ve welcomed two new Assistant Morale Officers to KBN this Christmas to help Bernard with his Chief Morale Officer duties.

Reggie and Florence are 13 week old Maine C**n babies.

They are hilarious and I’m excited to fully integrate them into the household and my office.

I know I’m late coming to the party for Mental Health Awareness Week NZ, but that is just what it is!!

I have a lot of strategies in place to try and keep my brain and mood on an even keel - I have to keep good sleep routine, I eat good food (including the occasional tasty 🍩), I manage my stress ok most of the time, I see an amazing clinical psychologist on the regular, I have great friends (❤️❤️), I live in a beautiful place, surrounded by trees and birds and I take my meds every day and supplements when I remember!

The thing that sets me back the fastest if I don’t keep a regular schedule is moving my body. Some days I go hard out and push myself; when that feels good (like in this video). Some days I just go for the warm up some monkeying around and a bit of stretching (like today). Some days I go for a walk around the garden or tramp up a hill. It is all good!!

Big shout out to Kapua Togo and my buddies at Our Place Community Fitness for making it fun and cheering me on.

My brain is back in the game, preparing another course of study.

This one is very close to my geeky little heart - pharmacology.

I ❤️ drugs - they fascinate me.

It’s good to be back in a more academic headspace after a lot of time in clinical practice.

I love them both, but they are very different skill sets.

My need for my light box has come late this year, but it’s another gloomy day in Auckland and I don’t seem to be able to turn enough lights on.

I have no plans to travel overseas this year, so here’s my sunshine supplement.

(I’d prefer a fortnight on a small tropical island, but I chose a new kitchen instead!!)

Seasonal affective disorder season is here!!

Sometimes I write things.

If you’ve ever wondered about hair testing for allergies and intolerances and other things, here is a review that I wrote with Cliff Harvey PhD a while ago.

In a position stand for the Holistic Performance Institute published in 2017, Kirsten Beynon and I reviewed the evidence for and against hair testing.

Today is International Women’s Day.

To celebrate, I prescribe all you fabulous women one nice rest each.

It could be a nap, a massage, a walk in nature with a friend (furry ones included!), a coffee with your phone turned off - whatever you like.

You work so hard.

Enjoy, my lovelies.
