Measles outbreak update - Wellington
Two new measles cases have been confirmed, bringing the total to 10 nationwide, including 3 in Wellington. Most cases are linked to the 3 October Bluebridge Ferry exposure.
New locations of interest and several hundred close contacts have been identified at Wellington College and Wellington Girls’ College. We are contacting affected individuals. Please follow all advice if you are contacted.
What you need to know:
✅ Watch for symptoms: high fever, cough, sore red eyes, rash

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious health problems like pneumonia and brain swelling. One in three people with measles will need hospital care. Children under five, those who are pregnant, and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk. Two doses of the MMR vaccine after 12 months of age offer strong protection.

| 100 Years of Te Kūiti Hospital
Located in the centre of the King Country Te Kūiti Hospital is one of two in the region with Taumarunui Hospital the other.
In 1912 John Taonui Hetet donated 3.5 acres of land for a Hospital Reserve and in the same year fundraising for the hospital began. In 1919 more land was purchased and within six years the community and local bodies had raised £18,000. On 18 July 1925 the foundation stone was laid by the then minister of health, Sir Māui Pōmare.
The official opening of the hospital was in November 1926, however, it was not until February 1927 when the first patients were admitted.
The hospital, which currently has 16 beds, has seen many workers and patients over the years and continues to be a vital part of ensuring the health and wellbeing of the community.
Celebrations for the centenary will take place on the first and second of November 2025 with a site tour and the sharing of stories.
