Cortisone Injections!

Cortisone injections are used to suppress inflammation and/or reduce pain and swelling for some musculoskeletal conditions.

We recommend that if you need a cortisone injection you get an ultrasound guided injection at a radiology clinic. This way the radiologist is certain that they are in the correct structure.

A cortisone injection has a local anesthetic, a long acting pain killer and the corticosteriod all in the same injection. This means that firstly the local kicks in and numbs the area, then the pain killer will kick in and last for up to a few days while the corticosteriod has time to work. It is important to follow the instructions you are given in this time about what you can/cannot do in order for you to have the best effect possible from your cortisone injection.

Unfortunately cortisone injections do not fix the actual problem they reduce some of the symptoms of the problem. This is where people go wrong! A cortisone injection may be recommended in order to get your injury to settle down enough to allow you to do your rehabilitation exercises.
Yes this means you will still have to rehabilitate your injury- if you do not the effects of the cortisone will wear off and your signs and symptoms will come back.

Multiple cortisone injections into the same structure are not recommended.

This is a very real issue in NZ. Chronic pain can be a horrible, life debilitating issue that is poorly understood, and worse still, poorly managed by health professionals.

Many who have persistent pain struggle to get adequate help.

Did you know the foam roller is the absolute BEST way to stretch your quads?

Put the foam roller on the floor, then lie on top of it so your quad is on the roller. You can vary the amount of pressure you put onto the roller by either resting on your elbows (less pressure) or hands like a press-up (more pressure).

Step 1: move yourself back and forth on the roller - massaging along the entire length of the muscle from hip to knee. Do this for about 60 seconds.

Step 2: rest your weight on the roller on the areas that are a little more sensitive. This will break up any muscle adhesions. If this is uncomfortable, try to breathe and relax. Hold for a count of 7-10 only.

Repeat every 3 days.
