Leaking when you run, jump, sneeze or lift is common. But common does not mean normal, and it does not mean you simply have to live with it.
It's one of the most frequent things our women's health physio, Clodagh Quilter, helps women with. Originally from Ireland, Clodagh supports women through pregnancy, postnatal recovery, and bladder and continence concerns, and as a clinical Pilates instructor she brings a genuinely whole-body approach to her care.
A few things worth knowing:
- Your pelvic floor works as a team with your breath and your deep core. It is not only about squeezing; for some women the muscles need to learn to relax and coordinate rather than just tighten.
- It can appear after having a baby, around menopause, or with high-impact activity like running, skiing or lifting.
- It is very treatable, at any age and any stage. An assessment helps identify what is actually happening so your plan is tailored to you.
You do not need a referral to see Clodagh, and some conditions may be covered by ACC. If leaking has been quietly changing the way you train, walk or move, this is exactly the sort of thing she can help with.
