We often focus on eating well and getting enough sleep… but how often do we think about how we’re breathing?

I listened to a fascinating podcast last week hosted by Rangan Chatterjee with James Nestor, bestselling author of Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art.

He compares breathing to sleeping and eating. If we want to feel our best, not only do we need to sleep and eat well, but we also need to breathe well.

He shares research showing that conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, emphysema and even scoliosis may be improved through better breathing.

It made me stop and think about my own breathing. Do I mouth breathe? Am I using my diaphragm enough?

In clinic, this is something I often come back to. When the nervous system is under stress, breathing patterns can change, which can impact digestion, energy and overall health.

I’m curious… is this something you’ve ever thought about?

One of the best parts is that breathing is free. It’s a simple way to support your stress response and gut health. Something we can all start becoming more mindful of. I’ve had a break over the Easter period, which was good for the soul. It gave me a chance to slow things down and step out of my usual routine, which was very much needed.

It’s interesting how quickly the body can shift when we give it the rest it needs. Sleep can feel deeper, energy more consistent and digestion more settled.

This is something I often see in clinic as well.

Many women are doing all the right things with food and exercise, yet their bodies are still under a level of stress that affects how everything functions.

The 𝐠𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 are closely connected, and when the body is constantly switched on, digestion is not always prioritised in the way we would expect.

Sometimes the starting point is not doing more, but allowing time for rest.

It might be something small, like taking a short break, having a massage, allowing yourself a 20 minute nap or letting go of things that are not as important as they feel in the moment.

I remember going to see my doctor and other practitioners before I became a nutritionist. I was eating well and had made significant changes in my life, but I still felt off.

It was 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 and at times quite a 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 road to navigate, but I got there in the end.

This is a pattern I now see quite often in clinic. Women who are exercising, eating well and doing their best to look after themselves, yet still not feeling their best.

There can be ongoing bloating, disrupted sleep, irregular bowel motions and low libido, which we do not talk about enough. In some cases, there are also quite debilitating peri-menopausal symptoms.

On top of this, many are juggling full time work, relationships and children, often with very little time for themselves.

This is often where the 𝐠𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 are no longer working together as they should.

The good news is that there are ways to support this, gently and practically, to help bring back a sense of energy, balance and enjoyment in day to day life.

If this feels familiar, you are very welcome to reach out or book a 15-minute chat.

Why the Nervous System Matters More Than We Realise

Many people focus on digestion, sleep or energy without realising how central the nervous system is to all three.

It is easy to move through busy days without really checking in with ourselves, yet the nervous system is constantly responding to what is happening around us.

Changes in sleep, energy or digestion are often early signals that the system is under strain. The gut and nervous system are closely connected, so when one is under pressure the other often reflects it.

Sometimes the most helpful step is simply to pause, slow down and reconnect with the body. Practices such as supportive nutrition, breathing or Reiki can gently help the nervous system settle again.

Often the body already knows what it needs. We simply need to notice.

If you have noticed changes in your sleep, energy or digestion and would like support in understanding what your body may be signalling, you are welcome to get in touch. My work combines clinical nutrition, counselling and Reiki to support both the nervous system and digestive health.

Stool patterns are one of the clearest indicators of how digestion is functioning internally.

When stools are consistently slow or consistently too fast, it suggests that digestive processes are not moving as smoothly as they should.

This may reflect sensitivity to certain foods, imbalance within the gut or disruption in how digestion is working. There is rarely a single contributing factor.

The message itself is straightforward.
Something is not quite right.

When these patterns persist over time, they are worth noticing rather than ignoring or simply adapting to discomfort.

From a whole person perspective, listening to the body is about recognising patterns rather than reacting to isolated symptoms.

Digestive symptoms that repeat over time can offer insight into motility, daily rhythms and the influence of the nervous system on digestion.

This way of listening shifts the focus away from suppression and towards understanding.

When patterns are recognised, support can be more responsive, individual and sustainable.

Many people live with ongoing digestive symptoms that are managed day to day without being fully explored.

Bloating, altered bowel habits, abdominal discomfort and post meal fatigue are often treated as inconveniences rather than information.

When symptoms are familiar, it is easy to live with them rather than listen to what the body is communicating.
From a whole person perspective, these signals offer valuable insight into digestive function and nervous system regulation.

Listening is not about analysing symptoms in isolation.
It is about awareness, reconnection and supporting the body in a more responsive way.

This is where sustainable digestive health begins.

As the year settles in, many people find themselves back in routine, yet still feeling disconnected from their body.

The body is always communicating. What often changes is how clearly those signals are recognised and understood.

Through digestion.
Through energy levels.
Through subtle signs that can be easy to overlook when symptoms have been present for some time.

My work this year is centred around supporting people to reconnect with their body, digestion and the signals that guide sustainable, whole person health.

Meaningful change often begins not with doing more, but with listening.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡

Your 𝐠𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 are constantly communicating, working together to regulate digestion, mood and energy. When stress levels rise, that connection weakens and the body often responds with bloating, discomfort or changes in appetite and bowel habits.

𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 of how your body reacts to both food and emotion is an important step in restoring balance. Notice what happens after meals, how your body feels when you eat in a hurry and how stress affects your digestion. These quiet observations can reveal patterns that guide you toward better health.

Creating calm around mealtimes, eating slowly, and choosing foods that truly nourish your body can all help strengthen this 𝐠𝐮𝐭–𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and support smoother digestion.

A 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is that nutritionists only give meal plans or help with weight loss. But there is much more to it.

As a clinical nutritionist, I look at what is 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 beneath the surface. This includes interpreting blood and functional test results, supporting gut health, considering lifestyle stressors and identifying nutritional imbalances.

One client came to me with fatigue and digestive issues. Her GP suggested she “𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭” on a high TSH result. We requested a full thyroid panel, which confirmed Hashimoto’s.

About 𝟐𝟎 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 of thyroid hormone is converted in the gut, so when digestion is not working well, energy, mood and metabolism can all be affected.

It is not just what you eat. It is whether your body can break it down, absorb it and use it.

If you feel like something is being missed, 𝐃𝐌 𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝟏𝟓-𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 to explore what is really going on.

Most people come to me because they want more from life. More energy, better digestion, deeper sleep or simply to feel like themselves again.

But true health is about more than food or supplements. It is about 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰.

At Healing Naturally, I look at the full picture.

Nutrition supports the body, Counselling helps process emotions and Reiki restores balance on all levels.
Each person’s health journey is unique. That is why I meet my clients where they are and bring together the right tools for their needs.

I also offer 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, along with a thorough client history, to get to the root cause of ongoing health struggles. From there, I create a personalised strategy to help clients move forward with confidence and clarity.

Health is not just about fixing symptoms. It is about healing the whole so you can function and live fully.

If you are looking for more balance in your health journey, I would love to help. Book a free 15-minute Lifestyle Connect call to see what is possible for you. Contact me at 𝐡𝐚𝐳𝐞𝐥@𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.𝐜𝐨.𝐧𝐳 or visit 𝐡𝐭𝐭𝐩𝐬://𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞.𝐜𝐨𝐦/𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 to book.
