We're only days away from our annual Art-Full Weekend!! From 10am this Friday until 3pm Sunday the Matakana hall will be buzzing with creativity. Come and see what our talented local crafters have been working on all year. We'll have our painters, potters, glass artists, felters, flax weavers, book artists, porcelain painters, leather artists and spinners & weavers all exhibiting and selling their wares. Come and be inspired as well as purchase a wonderful hand crafted work of art for yourself or for a gift.

Also, I have the pleasure of welcoming the Yr 11 Textile students from Whangaparaoa College as co-exhibitors in our Denim Challenge!! They have been working all year on up-cycling recycled fabrics to help bring awareness to just how much perfectly usable fabric waste is clogging up the world's landfills! They will be exhibiting their creations on the stage at the hall with the rest of our Denim Challenge participants. Please come along and support their incredible efforts!! I've attached some photo's to give you a taste of what they've been doing below.
See you this weekend!

Kowhai Art and Craft has an exciting new initiative we'd like to share with you! The Upcycled Denim Challenge was created as a response to the global glut of textile waste in the world's landfills. Denim waste is one of the major contributors. Being such a hardy material, it is perfect for recycling and upcycling!

Any KAC member can enter the Challenge. All entries will be exhibited (and potentially sold) at the Kowhai Art & Craft yearly event "The Artful Weekend" in November.

Contestants can even mix denim with their existing practice: E.g.: painting on denim, mixing denim and tooled leather or clay or felt.

Thrift/OP shops are a great resource for extra denim if you need it. Check out the $1.00 rack at Warkworth Hospice or ask shops if they have old denim in their discard piles.

Different categories in the challenge include functional items - or wild and wacky.

If you are keen to join the challenge, or if you have any questions, please contact Carolann on 021 423 920.

If you would like to see what is created, come along to the Art-Full Weekend on the 10th-12th November at the Matakana Village Hall.

Here are some photos of already completed Denim Challenge pieces!
