Useful information about Covid-19 vaccinations

For the most up-to-date information about Covid-19 vaccinations in New Zealand please visit https://covid19.govt.nz/covid-19-vaccines/

Over the coming months some our Pharmacies will be offering Covid-19 Vaccinations. Check our online service booking page to find your nearest Unichem or Life Pharmacy providing Covid vaccinations. We will update this as more pharmacies start to offer this service.

The vaccine is free for everyone 16 years and over but has now provisionally been approved for use in those ages 12 - 15 years inclusive.

WHEN CAN I GET THE COVID-19 VACCINE?
The Ministry of Health have a roll-out plan starting with our most vulnerable people in the community. Check your eligibility and find out what Group you are in. You can use this Tool to find out when you can get the vaccine. Following this plan Groups 1, 2 and 3 are currently being vaccinated, but there will be enough vaccines for everyone.

VACCINE SAFETY
Vaccines work by teaching the body’s immune system to respond quickly to infection without being exposed to the infection itself.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is known as a ‘messenger RNA’ vaccine. These vaccines don’t use virus cells at all – instead, they contain a piece of RNA code that essentially teaches your body to recognise the virus. It can respond straight away if you get infected.

The Pfizer vaccine:

is a messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine
does not contain any live virus, or dead or deactivated virus
can't give you COVID-19
can't affect your DNA
does not contain any animal products.
IF YOU’RE GETTING ANOTHER VACCINE
For information about when you should get your flu, MMR and pregnancy vaccinations if you're also getting a COVID-19 vaccination, visit the Ministry of Health website.

Getting other vaccines — Ministry of Health

IF YOU HAVE AN UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITION
Consistently high efficacy of over 92% was observed in the clinical trials for the Pfizer vaccine across age, s*x, race, ethnicity, and people with underlying medical conditions.

You can get early access to the COVID-19 vaccine if you're aged 16 years and over, and meet one or more of the following criteria:

You have a health condition that means you are eligible for a publicly funded influenza vaccine, including pregnant people.
You have been diagnosed with severe mental illness (which includes schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder, and adults currently accessing secondary and tertiary mental health and addiction services).
You have poorly controlled or severe hypertension (hypertension is another name for high blood pressure). In this case, severe is defined as requiring 2 or more medications for control.
You are severely obese (defined as a BMI ≥40).
IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER HEALTH CONCERN OR ARE PREGNANT
The Ministry of Health website has more advice about getting vaccinated for people who are:

pregnant
breastfeeding
trying for a baby
have a health condition
disabled
getting treatment
taking medication.

IF YOU’VE HAD AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO ANY VACCINE
If you’ve had a serious or immediate allergic reaction to any vaccine or injection in the past, discuss this with your vaccinator.

IF YOU HAVE A HISTORY OF ANAPHYLAXIS
You shouldn’t get the Pfizer vaccine if you have a history of anaphylaxis:

to any ingredient in the Pfizer vaccine
to a previous dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
IF YOU’RE UNDER 16
People under the age of 16 are not able to get the Pfizer vaccine at this stage. Medsafe has given provisional approval of the Pfizer vaccine for young people aged 12 to 15 years. Cabinet still needs to approve a ‘decision to use’ – their decision is expected by the end of June. Until then people aged 12 to 15 cannot receive the Pfizer vaccine. It will not be mandatory for young people to get vaccinated.

Getting your flu vaccine is one of the best things you can do to help stay well through the flu season. Flu can be anywhere and is easily spread through talking, coughing and sneezing. Your best protection from the flu is getting the vaccine.

Your vaccination will be delivered by a qualified vaccinating Pharmacist who will take you through a few questions and a consent form before administering your vaccination.

It’s very quick and there's only a 20 minute wait afterwards or 5 minutes if you bring someone with you to ensure there is no reaction to the injection, your Pharmacist will go over this with during your consultation.

The vaccine is FREE for people who are considered more likely to get seriously sick with the flu i.e. if you're over 65 years, pregnant or have a chronic condition. For the general public a charge applies.

Hero vitamins and herbs for keeping colds away

Many people get colds and flu every winter, so why is it that some ‘lucky’ people don’t seem to ever get sick? Is it good luck or good management? Pharmacist Martin Harris, from Unichem Massey Pharmacy, believes it’s the latter and discusses why in this article from Living Well magazine.

The immune system is complex so the list of nutrients that can benefit it is very long. For this reason, Martin recommends his patients take a high-quality multivitamin/mineral targeted at the nutrients the immune system requires, plus a quality herbal immune booster.

Hero vitamins
Vitamin A plays a vital role in the immune system. White blood cells are the core of the immune system, and vitamin A has been shown to enhance the activity of many white blood cells. It also strengthens the walls of the respiratory tract, reducing the risk of infection.

When you get an infection, your body makes less vitamin A in the liver. It also increases the amount of vitamin A that is excreted in the urine. Ironically, you often end up with less just when you need more.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it can become toxic if taken in high doses for long periods of time. The maximum dose during pregnancy is 10,000 IU/day. If you’re not pregnant, then much higher doses can be used for short periods to prevent or treat colds and flu.

When you get an infection, your levels of vitamin C drop. Once again, this seems to be a design fault because vitamin C plays a vital role in the immune system, and can increase a person’s capacity to fight infection. Vitamin C has direct antiviral and antibacterial actions and can increase the body’s production of interferon (a natural antiviral compound produced in the body). Boost your vitamin A and C levels throughout autumn and winter and at the first sign of illness.

Hero herbs
Echinacea helps to prevent and support bacterial and viral infections. It does this by boosting
the effectiveness of many white blood cells, including Natural Killer Lymphocytes. Who wouldn’t want their ‘Natural Killers’ on the loose fighting the bad guys?

Elderberry has been shown to prevent the influenza virus from replicating. It may also stop viruses from entering your cells. This gives your immune system a huge head start in the fight against viral colds and flu. Olive Leaf has been shown to have benefits in suppressing the replication of viruses, such as those that cause colds and flu.

Ask your Pharmacist

This list of nutrients and herbs is by no means exhaustive. Ask your Unichem Pharmacist for advice on what would be the best immunity-boosting support products for you.
