An intersting paper re teenagers / intermediate / high school students with APD published last week.

Conclusions include systematic review of devices - New Zealand APD Guidelines state: “It is recommended that the fitting and verification of RMHAs is always carried out by a qualified audiologist with real ear measurement equipment and functional (behavioural) verification of fittings, and that fittings are reviewed annually.”

The majority of students stated what a hastle it was going to the School office to collect their devices each morning. Ministry of Education funded RMHAs can go home with a student as long as there is an agreement between the principal and parents/whānau. If this is an issues for you / your child - suggest you request a meeting with learning support. MoE have a management plan template on their website than can be used to document the agreement.

Now that the cold weather has arrived, it's important to make sure your smoke alarms are working, but if you live with hearing loss, you'll know there is a very real risk of not hearing ordinary smoke alarms!

Specialised smoke alarms for people with hearing loss are available at Your Way l Kia Roha who provide free assessments.

Conventional smoke alarms emit a high-pitched sound which is not always audible for deaf people, particularly at night when cochlear implants or hearing aids are removed.

In comparison, specialised smoke alarms have features such as flashing strobe lights or vibration. Kia Roha can also tell you if you’re eligible for funding to install the alarm system.
Please phone 0800 008 011 or email hearing@yourwaykiaroha.nz for further information and to arrange an assessment.

Professor David McAlpine, academic director Macquarie University Hearing, discusses pros & cons of noise cancelling technology.

Noise cancelling devices are big business, and it's no surprise with excess noise exposure linked not only to hearing loss but even increased risk of cardiovascular disease and depressive symptoms. But it turns out too much noise reduction comes with its own warnings.
