Hatha Yoga Wellington

Hatha Yoga Wellington Sam teaches one to one yoga, group classes and pregnancy yoga in Wellington, NZ. Shadow Yoga is grounded in the Ancient Hatha Texts.

This system utilises preludes (or forms) to guide and challenge the student without forcing them beyond where they are naturally at any given point. Over time the fixed forms and their associated āsanas (or seats) enable the student to practice the more subtle and refined stages, an understanding of which is not fully realised without the presence of a solid foundation. Sam has studied various forms of yoga over the years. However, it was not until being introduced to Shadow Yoga, in 2002, that the notion of what yoga really is took hold. Sam completed a 3 year teacher training course with Sundernath (Shandor Remete), the founder of Shadow Yoga and Emma Balnaves, in 2012.

‘Mantra’ can be broken down into two parts; man refers to mind (manas) and tra refers to protection. This role is exemplified in the opening prayers made before practice that invoke guidance and protection from the lineage of gurus.

The early sequences consist of a number of different squatting movements repeated many times. These movements reshape and strengthen the joints of the legs, causing the ankles to soften, removing the stress from the knees and loosening the hips. At the same time one learns how to lower and raise the energy of the body without forcing.

Maintaining and directing the energised state when moving from the standing activities to the seated practices is a great skill and many fall into dull or mechanical behaviour. The practice used to navigate this transition is called the Jade Lady Waving.
