The month of October is Cultural Month! We love celebrating all the different cultures of our clients that come to see us and all the different and wonderful dog breeds we get to see! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿถ

So we thought for this month we will share a little about each of our Therapists that make up our awesome team by asking them some questions about their culture and where they come from. ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿฅฐ

Next we have Lauren๐Ÿ˜Š

1. Where were you born (where in NZ if NZ)
I was born in Lower Hutt Hospital, Wellington. Iโ€™ve been a Tawa local ever since! Now purchasing my childhood home. ๐Ÿ’•

2. Are you made up of any other backgrounds (for example, parents or grandparents from somewhere else)?
Not really โ€” my familyโ€™s always just considered ourselves just Kiwi. Weโ€™ve never had any strong cultural background or traditions, just our own little mix of family quirks. But origins I assume would be Ireland Scotland etc.๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

3. What is a favourite family recipe?
Probably something simple like Dadโ€™s Mac and cheese or mums toad in the hole Nothing fancy, just the kind of meal everyone ends up going back for seconds of.๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿง€

4. What slang word may you use that our clients hear you say that may be unique to you or your culture?
I definitely catch myself saying โ€œsweet asโ€ or โ€œyeah nahโ€ all the time.๐Ÿ˜†

Below are Lauren & sweet Myra soaking in the beautiful sunshine! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜โ˜€๏ธ

1. Where were you born? - I was born in Singapore and I'm 100% Punjab. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

2. Are you made up of any other backrounds? For example where were your parents or grandparents from? - My mum is from Punjab in India and dad is a second generation Punjabi Singaporean

3. Can you share one of your favorite family meals you love - We have lots of favourite recipes. Singapore is really multicultural so we eat food from everywhere in the world. I think if I had to pick just 1, it would be a good nasi lemak with ikan bilis and sambal kang kong. ๐Ÿ˜‹

4. What slang word may you use that our clients hear you say that may be unique to you or your culture? - I'm not sure if you'll hear me saying anything different, maybe some seemingly strange acupuncture phrases like "I'm going to tonify your dog's kidney qi." ๐Ÿชก

Below is Prabz and her beautiful furbaby!๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜

2. Where did your parents and or grandparents come from? - My mom was born in South Africa. My dad is originally from England and moved to SA when he was 20. My grandfather is South African ,Scottish and my gran SA.

3. Can you share one of your favorite family meals you love - Ooooh us South Africans love food and gathering together to share a meal. We love a good braai but one of my fav family meals is my grandma's Potato Salad ๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ— and sisters heart warming vegetable soup.๐Ÿ’—

4. What slang word may you use that our clients hear you say that may be unique to you or your culture. Hahaha there is so many. We may be here all day! But a few I use often is:
Eina - Meaning ouch or sore.
Shame - Us South Africans use this word in EVERY context, positive, complimentary, sad, sarcastic etc etc. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
Now now - Could mean 30 minutes, today, tomorrow 2 weeks from now haha. ๐Ÿคฃ

Below are Sara and adorable Larry and Handsome Dingo! Enjoying the beautiful Kapiti Views! Ahhh Shame look how cute they are! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜

Next we have Gabby ๐Ÿ˜Š

1. Where were you born? - Ashburton, NZ.๐Ÿ˜Š

2. Where did your parents and or grandparents come from? - Iโ€™m pretty boring, being 4th or 5th generation NZer most of my background is Scottish and Irish but there is a cheeky 5% West African there too. My dog is much more interesting than me as he was born in the Czech Republic.๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

3. Can you share one of your favorite family meals you love - My late Auntyโ€™s chicken casserole is definitely a favourite of mine.๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ˜

4. What slang word may you use that our clients hear you say that may be unique to you or your culture. Hmm, I probably use a lot of slang but one word I find commonly used in NZ (and in the clinic) which people overseas havenโ€™t heard of is โ€˜pottleโ€™. Pottle of treats goes well at Black Dog!๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜‹

Below are Gabby and adorable Monty enjoying the stunning view and I'm sure Gabby had a "pottle" of treats close by! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฃ

First up we have Tara ๐Ÿ˜Š

1. Where were you born? - I was born in Northern Ireland, a distinct region from Ireland and England with it's own culture and humour (can't you tell we're very proud of that!)

2. Where did your parents and or grandparents come from? - My parents and grandparents also came from Northern Ireland but I believe my grandmother's dad was German.

3. Can you share one of your favorite family meals you love - My dad makes great Soda Farls - but I can't eat them anymore as I'm coeliac! ๐Ÿ˜ญ

4. What are some slang words clients may hear you use in the clinic - This could get messy so I'll keep it clean! I do use 'wee' a lot to describe something small or a short period of time or possibly just "a wee cuppa tea!" I also say 'now' or 'right' at the beginning or end of a task as a kind of perparatory word. My pronunciation of 'now' often has people very confused!๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜†

Below are Tara and Daisy enjoying a "wee" nap together! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฃ

Big news at Black Dog Physio!

Weโ€™re so happy to welcome Dr Prabz Kaur from to our little family of therapists from 8 October 2025.

Not only is Dr Prabz a licensed vet, but also a certified veterinary acupuncturist, which means your pets now have even more ways to feel their very best!

From wiggly pups to wise old cats, Dr Prabz brings a gentle, caring approach to every patient.

We canโ€™t wait for you and your animals to meet her, please join us in giving Dr Kaur a big, warm welcome!

Information for clients:

Did you know animals can benefit from acupuncture too?

Acupuncture isnโ€™t just for people, itโ€™s a gentle, natural way to support your pet's health and wellbeing. We often recommend it for:
โœ… Helping sore joints, stiffness, or arthritis
โœ… Easing pain after injury or surgery
โœ… Supporting recovery in older pets whoโ€™ve slowed down
โœ… Managing chronic conditions in a safe, drug-free way
โœ… Reducing stress and improving overall wellbeing

Most pets find acupuncture super relaxing (some even fall asleep during their session!).

If your furry friend could use some extra support, have a chat with us. Weโ€™d love to see if acupuncture might help.

Or even if you are just curious of whether acupuncture could help your pet? Give us a call or send us a message to learn more. ๐Ÿฅฐ
