In this video, Dr Steven Fish, a GP in Waimate, shares how what began as a working holiday in New Zealand turned into a 16-year journey for him and his family.

For many rural clinicians, practising in Aotearoa offers the opportunity to work across a broad scope of medicine while becoming a valued part of the local community. It’s also a lifestyle that allows time for the things that matter outside the clinic — from cycling through stunning countryside to enjoying the mountains, lakes, and outdoor experiences that make rural New Zealand unique.

Stories like Dr Fish’s highlight the impact of attracting and retaining skilled clinicians in rural communities — strengthening healthcare access and helping ensure rural services remain sustainable for the people who rely on them.

Rural healthcare in New Zealand is built on strong connections between rural general practices, rural hospitals, and the communities they serve.

For many rural communities, general practice is the first point of contact for healthcare — providing everything from preventative care and chronic disease management to urgent treatment and specialist referrals. Rural hospitals work alongside these teams to deliver responsive care close to home, often with fewer resources but a deep commitment to their communities.

Supporting these services means supporting the rural health workforce — ensuring clinicians can thrive both professionally and personally in the communities they serve.

In this video, Dr Steve Fish, a family doctor in Waimate, shares his experience of rural medicine and the work–life balance that comes with living and working in rural Aotearoa.

Because rural practice offers more than a career — it offers connection, community, and a lifestyle that’s hard to match.

Rural medicine in Aotearoa offers more than just a career — it offers a lifestyle.

Across rural communities in New Zealand, general practices and rural hospitals work closely together to deliver essential healthcare. From managing chronic conditions to responding to emergencies, rural clinicians play a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of their communities.

But life in rural medicine isn’t only about the mahi.

It’s also about the lifestyle — the space to explore the outdoors, spend time with whānau, and be part of a close-knit community.

In this video, Dr Jared Bayless, an emergency doctor in Taupō, shares what he loves about living and working in rural Aotearoa — and the incredible outdoor experiences that come with it.

If you’re considering rural medicine, the opportunities go far beyond the clinic.

To begin this year’s practice visits, Amanda Ellorey, Rebekah Doran, and newcomer Jo Husband travelled across the Waikato Region, visiting seven rural communities over three days. Their journey started in Taupō, before continuing through Tokoroa, Te Kūiti, and Otorohanga, and finishing the trip in Morrinsville, Te Aroha, and Matamata.

These visits are a vital part of how we deliver national rural recruitment and locum support services across New Zealand. By meeting directly with rural practices, our team gains valuable insights into local workforce challenges, service pressures, and opportunities to strengthen support for rural health teams and the communities they care for.

Maintaining strong relationships with practices ensures we can respond quickly to workforce needs, support recruitment and retention, and help keep essential rural health services operating for the communities that rely on them.

Thank you to the teams who welcomed us into your practices and took time out of busy clinics to share your experiences.
This is just the beginning of our 2026 practice visits — we look forward to continuing the journey and working alongside rural practices across the motu.
