🌟 20 Years of NZSL as an Official Language 🌟

In 2026, we’re celebrating a huge milestone β€” 20 years since New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) became an official language of Aotearoa.

As part of NZSL Week 2026, we’re proud to host the NZSL Awards Night at Te Papa πŸ›οΈ β€” a powerful Deaf-led, fully accessible celebration to honour the people, allies, and organisations helping to build an Aotearoa where anyone can sign anywhere.

✨ This year’s theme "A Legacy in Our Hands" pays tribute to those who fought for recognition of NZSL and reminds us all that we each have a role in shaping its future.

πŸ’« With categories recognising grassroots leadership, creative storytelling, inclusive workplaces, outstanding interpreting and more β€” the Awards celebrate the many ways NZSL thrives in our communities.

Here's your chance to watch a powerful moment in history - the Deaf Flag raised at New Zealand Parliament for the very first time!

Huge ngā mihi to World Federation of the Deaf Ry member Victoria Manning for raising the flag with pride and purpose, and to everyone who braved the weather to mark this special occasion.

It’s amazing to see the growing reach and awareness of International Week of Deaf People and International Day of Sign Languages - a testament to the strength and visibility of our communities globally.

The theme, No Human Rights without Sign Language Rights, reminds us why this mahi matters.
