Ora natural therapy clinic Tui Parker ND My father’s mother was a great influence to me of wholefood diets. So it comes very naturally to me and is almost a part of my being.

Tui Parker ND

My insight to natural therapy was introduced to me by both of my grandmothers and my mother, through healthy diet, naturopathic treatments and rongoã. As a child I was drawn to naturopathy after experiencing significant health improvements through my mother taking me to a naturopath for treatment, after having tried other unsuccessful approaches for regaining my own health. She always had fresh organic vegetables from her own garden and used them to make wonderful wholesome meals and preserves, along with using other nutritional ingredients. Living with her throughout various times of my life gave me insight into growing your own fruit with tree and vegetables with gardening. Since then I have always had a passion to grow my own food and spent 6 years of my life working with propogating plants in nurseries and planting them out with landscaping jobs. And more recently with planting out literally hundreds of plants and fruit orchard trees on my property in Kaikoura. My mother’s mother was Tohunga Rongoa Maori (A master of Maori medicine, a herbalist) and her mother was and her mother was and so on. As a young child from the age of 6 through to 11 she would travel with me to the far North of New Zealand to gather Wairakau Rongoã Mãori (Traditional Mãori Medicines), from the forests to make natural medicinal preparations for encouraging good health. Also as a child from the age of 5 through to 11 my Aunt taught me the gift of massage. She use to show me the way of which one should massage and she would then let me practise. So Massage (Mirimiri and romiromi) has been a form of therapy that I have done since a very young age. When I massage it speaks to me and guides me to where attention is needed with each individual patient. Those moments of knowledge are great toango (treasures) to me. They lead me to partake in various Rongoã Mãori Wãnanga (Mãori medicinal workshops) throughout the country (including papers and certificates with Waikato University), to enhance and hold on to the knowledge shared from my elders. My Iwi (tribes) are Ngati Porou, Ngati Uepohatu me Te Whanau A Apanui, no te Tai Rawhiti. All of my experiences in benefiting from better health and also from having seen it in others gave me great confidence in natural medicines and natural modalities. They helped me feel like I too wanted to assist others in their health. So I decided to take my education further by commencing a Diploma in Naturopathy with The Naturopathic College of New Zealand (NCNZ) in 2002, which was gained in 2006. Through my experience as a naturopath and therapist of various modalities, I have developed great skills and gained priceless experience and knowledge. These have given me great interest to raise awareness of the benefits of naturopathy/natural therapies to help educate the community with natural health modalities. I am dedicated to helping individuals achieve an optimal state of health by being readily available to all. To do this I have established a current clinic in Wellington and online to the world to offer consultations, treatments and advise to the public. In the past I’v had experience in running my own health clinic in Kaikoura for two years, where I offered relaxation massage and reflexology and a year on Willis St in Wellington treating with most of the naturopathic skills that I practice with today. I intend to re-establish another clinic to practise in within Kaikoura again in the near future. My intention is to help improve your quality of life and help prevent further health ailments by providing the best possible advice, resources, and therapy for the best possible care and attention to your needs as a client. '' BANANAS...''
A very interesting FACTS

Never, put your banana in the refrigerator!!!...
This is interesting. After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

DEPRESSION:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS:
Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

ANEMIA:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

BLOOD PRESSURE:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

BRAIN POWER:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

CONSTIPATION:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

HANGOVERS:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

HEARTBURN:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

MORNING SICKNESS:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

MOSQUITO BITES:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

NERVES:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system..

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

ULCERS:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL:
Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, 'A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!'

Gorse.....
A plant which is now a pest, in abundance. Is not only a high nitrogen fixing plant for our soils. But also provides beautiful flowers which can be harvested for many various beverages and foods.

If you are prepared to tackle the pricks, you'll be delighted with their outcome.

Foraging Gorse Flowers

Have you ever tasted gorse flowers? They have an interesting slight coconut / vanilla flavor which you wouldn't expect. Gorse flowers can be used to make all sorts of wild drinks, but it takes soooo long to pick each flower, and it's a scratchy, uncomfortable business. Lately I've been picking some of these gorgeous yellow flowers to dehydrate, powder and roll my bliss balls in.

Gorse (Urex europaeus) is part of the pea/legume family. It's for that reason that Gorse was loved by the early British and originally brought over to New Zealand (where it went wild and is now considered a pest).

In Britain Gorse was planted in mass to enrich the soil (legume family plants are all nitrogen fixers, fixing nitrogen into the soil via their roots). It was planted in agricultural areas to improve & enrich the soil. Every part of the plant was valued, to the point that laws were passed to ensure that it wasn't overharvested (can you believe it!). The plant was well managed to prevent spreading, the young shoots were used to feed livestock, the oil rich wood as firewood, the ashes to make soaps & as a rich source of potassium to be used as a fertiliser. The roots were used to stabilise loose soil & prevent erosion. It's such a shame that this plant has taken off in New Zealand and is now considered such a pest. But this is the case with most so called 'weeds'.

Whilst our ancestors highly valued ('weeds' & 'pests') for food/medicine/firewood etc, we now see them as weeds and shun them, to our own detriment.

The good news is that despite popular belief, Gorse *can sometimes * act as a great nurse crop for NZ native plants & regenerating forest. They shelter and nurture the young natives, protecting them from wind & sun and trampling (from deer, goats & pigs), and then when the native gets tall enough to shade out the gorse, it dies back & feeds and enriches the soil.

However this is not the case in all settings. Please note that I do not encourage the introduction, planting or intentional spreading of weeds or pest plants inro New Zealand. However, as I forager, I'm always looking for ways to use the abundant plants that are growing around us.

There is gorse all over New Zealand, accessible to most of us, flowering most of the year. This article is intended simply to inform and inspire you about it's alternative uses.

Please don't rush out and plant it! It IS a pest in most places.

Be mindful when gathering gorse that it hasn't been sprayed, and pick on a warm sunny day. Damp flowers deteriorate very quickly.
