Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways, making it difficult to breathe. It causes chest tightness, wheeze, shortness of breath, and coughing. Flares (asthma ‘attacks’) cause airway spasm which can kill if untreated.
Although we have got better at treating asthma, it is becoming more common in kiwi kids and we are not sure why...
The PIPPA Tamariki study has been started to investigate if fever and pain medicines (like Paracetamol and Ibuprofen) could affect the chance of developing childhood asthma. These are known to be safe and effective for treating pain and fever, but it is not known if they affect the chances of developing asthma if needed at a young age.
We are recruiting families who are about to have a new baby from Wellington, Auckland, and Middlemore hospitals. Participation involves filling out short surveys to note if your baby needs any medicines, and which ones, in their first year.
The results of this study will help doctors, parents, and kids worldwide. If you would like to register interest in taking part, or find out more, please fill out this form: https://trials.mrinz.ac.nz/surveys/?s=JN3XCYR87E
