🔆 Haere mai January! 🔆

A little late to the game as we're already more than a week into the new year but we've been busy doing less than usual -- and we hope you are, too!

January's a fairly quiet month at the whare as we prepare for a big year ahead -- keep an eye out on this space for upcoming changes and offerings over the next couple of months...2026 is going to be epic!

Wed, 28th Jan, 5:30pm - 7:30pm: ALIGN & WINE - It's back! After a successful post-class toast in November, we'll convene again after Align + GM on the last Wednesday of the month for a wee social hour in reception. Please join! Light refreshments served (alc & non) - just a chance to get together and hang in a low stakes context. Come to class, stay for a drink & yarn. See you there!

‘Yoga is for everybody’. Yes, sure…but then why does nearly every body in the room so often look the same?

😌 YIN YOGA EXPLAINED 😌

Yin Yoga is a slow, meditative practice where postures are held for longer periods (3-5 minutes or more) to gently target the deeper layers of the body—our joints, fascia and other connective tissues. With minimal effort and plenty of prop support, yin invites stillness, presence, awareness, and a chance to deeply soften into both body and mind. The best part: it’s not about how a pose looks, but how it feels.

Our facilitators are required to complete a minimum of 50 hours of specialised training in Yin Yoga before they can teach into our Yin classes at AWHI. We require this additional training because this style of asana is so fundamentally different from vinyasa (or 'yang') practices in terms of anatomy and physiology; whakapapa (place, culture & philosophical underpinnings); asana names & shapes; sequencing and kaupapa.... etc. We believe we'd be doing a disservice to NOT require specialised yin training to ensure students are safely guided and held throughout this very special practice.

Never been to Yin or think it's not for you? Perhaps the New Year is finally your time to give it a go! We offer at least one Yin class daily (outside the holidays) - we'd love to hear how you rate it! Haere mai!

In yoga, seva means selfless service — offering our time, energy, or resources without expectation of return. It includes letting our practice extend beyond the mat into how we care for others, our communities, and the world around us. 🤍

Through this spirit of seva, and with YOUR support, we shared over $26,000 in koha with non-profits dedicated to the hauora/wellbeing of Aotearoa in 2025.

This is yoga in action: caring for one another, uplifting our communities, and honouring our deep interconnectedness. Thank you - our community - for practising, giving, and serving alongside us. 🌿

Our 2025 recipients included

If you’re wanting to contribute through 2026, you can find our koha classes on the timetable every Sunday 10am and Tuesdays 9:30am.

Arohanui e te whānau 🙏💚

Awhi Yoga & Wellbeing

AWHI ~ pronounced “uffy” (verb) to embrace, hug, support, cherish. Your community, your wellbeing - mind, body & spirit.

Our kaupapa here at Awhi Yoga & Wellbeing is based on Te Whare Tapa Whā, the four pillars of Hauora or Wellbeing. We feel that within a supportive community or Whānau, mindful movement & physical health - Tinana - can support our mental & emotional wellbeing - Hinengaro - and thus connect us to our Wairua, spirit or sense of connection and purpose in the world. Supporting you to live into the fullest expression of yourself alongside those you love.

We also feel there are many ways to access our wellbeing which is why we offer a range of classes from Vinyasa flow Yoga (heated & non-heated) to gentle Yin Yoga, Meditation, Yin Therapy, Pilates, live music Yoga events, self development programs, retreats & trainings. All this wrapped in a supportive community - Awhi Yoga & Wellbeing. Come join us.
