Talk Time: Expressive Writing & the Science of Journaling
In last week’s episode of Talk Time, I was joined by my colleague Teresa Saunders for a thoughtful conversation about a powerful, science-backed approach to journaling that goes far beyond traditional daily reflection.
We explored expressive writing — a structured journaling method developed by psychologist Dr James Pennebaker, and more recently highlighted by neuroscientist Andrew Huberman. This approach has been shown to support emotional processing, language shifts, nervous system regulation, and even physical wellbeing when practised safely and intentionally.
Rather than writing about everyday events, expressive writing involves short, focused sessions (around 15–20 minutes) where the brain is given space to process emotionally significant experiences — without worrying about grammar, structure, or anyone else ever reading it.
In this episode, we talk about:
• What expressive writing is (and what it isn’t)
• Why short writing sessions can create lasting change
• How language patterns shift as healing occurs
• The role of the brain and prefrontal cortex in emotional processing
• Why honesty and privacy are essential
• Important considerations when journaling around trauma
• How this method can complement therapeutic work
This conversation may resonate if you:
• Feel stuck processing past experiences
• Are interested in evidence-based self-reflection tools
• Work therapeutically with others and want to expand your toolbox
• Are curious about the connection between language, emotion, and healing
⚠️ A gentle note:
If you’re working with significant trauma or find strong emotions arising, it’s important to have appropriate support in place. This conversation is educational and not a substitute for professional care.
🎙️ We also reference research from the Huberman Lab and peer-reviewed studies on expressive writing.
If you’d like to listen, reflect, or share your thoughts, I’d love to hear what stood out for you.
And if you find these conversations helpful, liking or sharing really does help them reach others who may benefit.
